Typhoidââ¬â¢s killed Osama: Report
Intel Sources Speculate Heââ¬â¢s Died Due To Lack Of Medical Care, But No Confirmation
TNN & AGENCIES
Washington/Paris: Osama bin Laden may have died of lack of medical care following complications from typhoid. Reports to this effect swirled through intelligence and diplomatic networks on Saturday even as the US, French and Pakistani governments denied any knowledge of such a development and declined to confirm it.
The story about bin Ladenââ¬â¢s possible demise first surfaced in the French regional daily Lââ¬â¢Est Republicain, which produced a French secret service report to say Saudi Arabia was convinced that bin Laden died of typhoid in Pakistan in late August.
The daily said the DGSE (Franceââ¬â¢s foreign intelligence service) report was dated September 21. ââ¬ÅAccording to a usually reliable source, the Saudi security services are now convinced that Osama bin Laden is dead,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ the DGSE report quoted by the newspaper said. It said that ââ¬Åinformation gathered by the Saudisââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ indicates that bin Laden ââ¬Åmight have succumbed to a very serious case of typhoid fever resulting in partial paralysis of his lower limbs while he was in Pakistan on August 23, 2006.
ââ¬ÅHis geographic isolation provoked by constant fleeing is believed to have made medical assistance impossible (and) on September 4, 2006, the Saudi security services received preliminary information of his death.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢
The newspaper said the Saudis were ââ¬Åwaiting to obtain further details and notably the exact place of burial before officially announcing the newsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢.
The French government could not confirm the report, but said it would investigate the intelligence leak, confirming the existence of the report. Defence ministry spokesman Jean-Francois Bureau said that the DGSE document exists but that its contents ââ¬â that bin Laden is allegedly dead ââ¬â could not be confirmed.
President Jacques Chirac also said the report was ââ¬Åin no way confirmedââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ and added that he was ââ¬Åsurprisedââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ the newspaper had published it. ââ¬ÅI am a little surprised that a confidential DGSE note should be published,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ he said.
In Washington, Sean Mc-Cormack, a State Department spokesman, also said, ââ¬ÅWe donââ¬â¢t have any confirmation.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ On a weekend ahead of US president Bushââ¬â¢s talks with Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai and Pakistanââ¬â¢s military ruler Pervez Musharraf, the two principals in the hunt for bin Laden, the administration appeared to take a dim view of the news story that burnt the wires.

ââ¬ËSaudis have credible reports Osama deadââ¬â¢
Washington/Paris: Although French, American and Pakistani officials refused to confirm the intelligence reports about Osama bin Ladenââ¬â¢s death, Time magazine on Saturday cited an unnamed Saudi source to say Saudi officials have received ââ¬Åmultiple credible reportsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ over the last several weeks that the Al Qaida chief had been suffering from a waterborne illness.
The source believes that there is a ââ¬Åhigh probabilityââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ that bin Laden has already died from the disease, but stressed that Saudi officials have thus far received no concrete evidence of bin Ladenââ¬â¢s death, Time said. ââ¬ÅThis is not a rumour,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ Time quoted the source as saying. ââ¬ÅHeââ¬â¢s very ill. He got a water-related sickness, it could be terminal. There are a lot of serious facts about things that have actually happened. There is a lot to it. But we donââ¬â¢t have any concrete information to say that he is dead.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢
Rumours of bin Ladenââ¬â¢s death have been largely exaggerated before. He is said to have a serious kidney ailment and is rumoured to have been provided dialysis facility in Pakistan as far back as 2001. But according to latest accounts, the bin Laden trail went cold in 2004 and he has not been seen, even on video tape, since then.
