Two diplomats based in the Consulate General of Pakistan in Jalalabad, an eastern Afghan city, went missing June 16 while traveling to Pakistan by road, the Foreign Office (FO) confirmed Sunday.

A press release from FO Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria's office said Islamabad is in constant contact with Afghan authorities, and the matter of the diplomats' safety and recovery at the earliest has been raised with the relevant officials.

"Pakistan has requested the Afghan government that all efforts may be made to ensure early recovery of our officials and bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice," the FO statement said.

The FO added that Afghanistan is cooperating in the efforts to "probe the incident" and recover the two diplomats.

"Three distinct investigating groups have been constituted to ensure the safe recovery of the officials," the statement added.

The FO did not speculate who may be behind the disappearances, but various Afghan militant groups have targeted diplomats in the past.

ISLAMABAD: Two Pakistani diplomats based in a consulate office in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad have been missing since Friday. the Foreign Office said on Sunday.

They went missing after they set off by road back to their homeland,

The foreign ministry did not speculate who may be behind the disappearances but various Afghanistan-based militant groups have targeted diplomats in the past.

Regional affairs: Stable Afghanistan in our interest, speaker tells envoy

“Pakistan has requested the Afghan government that all efforts may be made to ensure early recovery of our officials and bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Afghan authorities informed the government that efforts were being made to probe the incident, it added. “Three distinct investigating groups have been constituted to ensure safe recovery of the officials”

Relations between Islamabad and Kabul have been tense in recent years, with both countries accusing each other of not doing enough to tackle Pakistani and Afghan Taliban militants.

Afghanistan has accused Pakistan of turning a blind eye to Afghan Taliban commanders based within its borders and of supporting the militant group, something Islamabad denies.

Security forces fend off two cross-border attacks

Islamabad has claimed that Kabul is not doing enough to tackle Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants who have been driven out the country, but who still carry out attacks across the border.

Jalalabad, the provincial capital of Nangarhar province, is a busy trading hub about 70km from the main border crossing with Pakistan, from which landlocked Afghanistan imports much of its goods.

The province is home to various terrorist groups, including TTP and Afghan Taliban. In recent years the Islamic State, also known as Da’ish, has also established a presence Nangarhar.

Seems India is getting desperate for Kulbhosan...

Mind you this is a game 2 can play.

Why our diplomats ? What proof do you have India has your diplomats and is torturing them and will return them in small pieces ?

Lt Col Habib and then this. Seems like you all are desperate for an exchange with your monkey man Kolbhosan. Forget about him after all this. He is a dead man.

You mean to say, India has no hand in Lt Col Habib's illegal kidnapping?
Do you have any proof to say otherwise. Let's just hope they return without any harm. Be it the diplomats or the Former ISI agent Habib.

Pakistan should cut all diplomatic ties and recall their people from Afghanistan.
