There are projects ongoing for that but none will be ready to enter service in the near future and the Indian Army needed these guns urgently to outfit its Mountain Strike Corps that is in the process of being raised. From 2019 5 M777/month will be handed over to the IA, the earliest a domestic alternative will be ready is 2023 (IMHO), by that time 100s of M777 will be in service.

The 5 gun/month applies only to the order for 145 M777s; of which 120 will be assembled in India (by Mahindra), starting in early 2019, for the follow-on order of larger quantities the rate of production will be increased accordingly.

145 will be in service by 2021 and the aim is to have the full 645 units (145+500) by 2025-6 with production increasing to 8-10 units/month.
