Indian & Bangladesh share a 4,095-kilometre (2,539-mile) border which is largely unfenced and their frontier guards often exchange gunfire.

Bangladesh says Indian forces regularly shoot its traders and cattle farmers in the border area, with over 100 being killed in just year 2007 alone .Every year many Bangladesh Farmers are killed by Indian BSF on the pretext that most these farmers are smugglers and were illegally crossing into Indian territory . Human rights group have repeatedly protested these incidents .

Repeated discussion between India and Bangladesh Indian border security agencies have failed to resolve these issues

Indian is also building a 2500km fence alongside Bangladesh border despite objection By Bangladesh .

India regularly accuses Bangladesh of pushing in illegal migrants into it's territory . India government also claims that extremist element uses Bangladesh territory to conduct Insurgency and act of sabotage inside India in collaboration with Pakistan ISI agents , allegations that Bangladesh completely denies.

Separatist groups in northeast India, such as the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, operate out of Bangladesh, according to the Indian government.

Bangladesh appealed to India on April 9 to share intelligence in order to reduce cross-border terrorism and said it won't allow its territory to be used for attacks on its western neighbor.

There are also several disputed enclaves within Each others territory which is has been major source of irritant between the two countries since 1971

Last October the border forces' chiefs of the two countries met in Dhaka and agreed to scale down the violence.

This latest incident happened on the Back drop of India Bangladesh secretarial level meeting that is taking place in New Delhi India . India is pressing Bangladesh to allow transit facilities over it's territory , a move that is strongly opposed by Bangladesh Government since there is strong public opinion against such move

Why is the Objection ? This would only cut down cross border movement.

SO the Indian border security force men fired at patrolling Bangladeshi soldiers that too inside Bangladeshi border. hmmm seems more sinister design on part of Indian security force.

BDR needs to sharpen its skills to shoot the intruding Indian BSF men and Bangladesh has the right to shoot these Indian BSF men for tresspassing into BD.

Thats what Indian soldiers and BSF are good at, Shooting the innocents.

 innocent BD think India will share the intellegence with them.

Goodperson thats why BD object to border fencing. Give BD its territory which was occupied by India in 71.

and BD is punished for not allowing India transit facilities.

One can understand the false allegations levelled by India against Bangladesh.

One should not be quick to give judgement here is the story in other media.

1 killed in BSF-BDR crossfiring
By Our Correspondent | Friday, 18 July , 2008, 14:41

Kolkata: At least two Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) troopers were killed in an encounter with India's Border Security Force (BSF) early Friday when the frontier men tried to prevent an attempt to smuggle out cattle to the other side.

BSF Director General A K Mitra said one Indian trooper was seriously injured and hospitalised while two BDR men were killed as claimed by Bangladesh authorities.

Column: Cracks in the Bangla Army

The incident occurred along the riverine border at Nimtita in Murshidabad district, about 250 km from here.

“Around 1 am we took five boats with each carrying four boatmen and a trooper to catch the cattle smugglers who were trying to ferry cattle from India to Bangladesh.

“Suddenly the BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) men opened fire from the dark. In the darkness we thought they were cattle smugglers. One of our troopers was hit by bullets and he fell down in the river but not before firing 16 rounds.”

What Dhaka needs to learn

“The BDR claimed two of their men were killed in the firing. Our injured jawan is in a critical condition too,” Mitra said.

“The BDR had no business to be there at such hours,” Mitra said.

“We have a flag meeting today in the afternoon,” he added.

The Indo-Bangladesh Border extends to a total length of 4095 kms, including 180 kms of river line.

West Bengal has a border length of 2216 kms with Bangladesh followed by Tripura 856 kms, Meghalaya 443 kms, Mizoram 318 kms and Assam 262 kms.

Besides infiltration from the Bangladesh side, cattle smuggling from India is common, primarily for beef in Muslim-majority Bangladesh.

India prohibits cattle exports, as beef consumption is frowned upon by the country's majority Hindu population.

There are frequent skirmishes among the troopers of the two sides along the border.

According to a BBC report, local estimates say that between 20,000 and 30,000 cows are smuggled into Bangladesh every day from India, mostly through West Bengal.

The smuggling is at its highest during Muslim festivals.

Traffickers bring the cows by truck to West Bengal from as far as Haryana and Punjab in northern India for smuggling.

Journalist must be careful and not judgemental as they are messenger of information to people.

Also I would like to Point out that BDR killed 16 BSF jawans just few years back.

The Tribune, Chandigarh, India - Main News

The fencing is to stop infiltration, Though the fences may not be very effective against terrorists, it is definitely effective against illegal immigration

Thats why its opposed by Bangladesh.

Bangladesh: Fighting over Fencing

Lot of shady activities go on...smuggling, drug trafficking, human trafficking.

The truth rarely comes out in such cases.

Who knows? A racket run by local commanders on both sided might have gone awry?

The shooting of the BDR personnel is intended to send a threatening message to Bangladesh as ongoing negotiations on transit facilities are not going well or more accurately not in India's favour.

Yes there are many border disputes between Bangladesh and India which go as far back as the boundary allocations in 1947.

It is not clear to me why it should automatically be assumed that the Indian report is more credible than the Bangladesh version? See link -

It is true that 19 BSF personnel were killed in 2004 but that was because they made an incursion into Bangladesh territory and attempted to capture territory forcibly. Bangladesh was merely acting in self-defence.

The fencing by India is intended as a symbolic gesture like the wall that has been put up on the West Bank. As the Muslim population increases in the North-East states the Indian government fears that their precarious hold over the region will further decline in the coming decades and Bangladesh influence will increase. What this policy fails to appreciate is that a mere fence will not separate two peoples that share the same religion and understanding and seek better relations. If this has the effect of bringing the North-East out of New Delhi's orbit it is not the fault of Bangladesh but the discriminatory and oppressive policies of the central government in India that has failed to accept the just claims to autonomy of the Seven Sister states.

Bangladesh is seeking "Lebensraum" in the NE ala the Nazis. The locals there are dead set against the illegal Bangladeshis migrants who are causing all kinds of problems and disrupting the demography of the region.

It is only some politicians who are allowing these intruders to stay in India. But things may go out of control any time. The NE people are angry with Delhi politicians for not taking the problem of illegal immigrants seriously and deporting them back.

This lebensraum nonsense has been spouted by your Jaideep Saikia who has been frightening Indians about a potential Brihot Bangladesh. This is the type of paranoia prevalent in Indian ruling circles nowadays. However, the Indian politicians have very little interest in these theories and count more on vote banks.

Dhaka, July 18 (bdnews24.com)—The foreign secretary-level talks between Bangladesh and India ended Friday in New Delhi with both sides expressing satisfaction over its outcome, and Indian transit taking a back seat, the foreign adviser said.

Dhaka and Delhi agreed, perhaps predictably, to boost cooperation in fighting terrorism and curbing the smuggling of arms, drugs and fake currencies, according to reports from the Indian capital.

The controversial issue of Indian transit did not get much weight, nor did the matter of border killings, Iftekhar said.

Bangladesh foreign secretary Md Touhid Hossain, before departing for Delhi to meet his Indian counterpart, said on Wednesday that the deaths of Bangladesh Rifles personnel by India's Border security Force in 'border skirmishes' would be one of the issues at the talks.

When asked whether Friday's border incident—in which two BDR men were shot dead by BSF with at least one reported BSF casualty—had affected the outcome of the talks in New Delhi, the foreign adviser said: "It would not be appropriate to comment at this time."

"We are all happy about the outcome of the foreign office consultation," Iftekhar told bdnews24.com Friday night.

"I have had talks with the foreign secretary and the high commissioner in Delhi. They briefed me about their discussions with the Indian side," he said.

Bangladesh at the talks requested India to reach an agreement on sharing of waters of the common rivers, especially of the Teesta, in the water-scarce northern part of the country, according to a previous statement issued by the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi.

But the two sides ended up agreeing only to the convening of the relevant technical committees to carry on the work in this regard, said the statement.

Touhid Hossain also requested greater access of Bangladeshi exports to India and for measures to reduce the $1.9 billion trade gap, the Bangladesh High Commission said on Thursday in its official statement on the talks.

Touhid also requested his Indian counterpart to expedite the export of the remainder of 5 lakh tonnes of rice to Bangladesh, and also to consider complete withdrawal of restrictions on rice export by India.

The foreign secretary level meeting also lauded the launch of the the Maitree Express, the long-awaited Dhaka—Kolkata direct passenger train link, and appreciated the need for reducing the waiting time of passengers at both borders, the High Commission said.

Touhid Hossain invited his Indian counterpart to visit Bangladesh for the next foreign office consultation at a convenient time.

The Bangladesh-India Foreign Office Consultation takes place every year to review issues of mutual interest. Last year's such meeting took place in Dhaka.

Now one can guess the point.

LOL....what is this, Bangladeshi Godfather? Which country uses a couple of BSF men to send a "threathing message"?

Hehe....I can picture Manmohan Singh: "We'll give them an offer they can't refuse"

Please.....nobody sends BSF to capture territory.

What was happening was an attempt by BDR to smuggle immigrants across the border.

The fencing by India is intended as a symbolic gesture like the wall that has been put up on the West Bank. What does the "Claims for Autonomy" have to do with Bangladesh immigration in the North East?

Your logic astounds!

The Assamese hate B'deshi immigrants with a passion, which is why they kill so many of them so regularly.

The fact is the Bangladesh is an overpopulated country that is literally spilling it sides.

And No.....having more Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam isn't going to help calm things down. People don't like it when their lands get occupied by foreign settlers.

One should not be quick to give judgement here is the story in other media.
Dude it is indian media which has even swallowed stories like mass graves and ethnic cleanising of minorities by indian security forces.
Have you wondered why they bothered to report attrocity of such a small scale? because it is in reply to the Bangladeshi news report, other wise no one in the world would ever know what happened.

Nonsense. The one who attacks or ambush is always in cover or catch other buy surprise and always manage to kill the ignorant. If Bangladeshi soldiers ambushed from dark than how come they themself became perfect target. :disagree:

Don't count on it for too long.

Things may turn around very quickly for the illegal immigrants if Bangladesh maintains the Anti-India posture. It would not take too much to get them all packed up and back.

BTW, I am surprised how the Bangladesh government disowns its own people. Never seen a worse example of not caring for its own citizens!
