Turkish businessmen looking for investment opportunities

ISLAMABAD: A delegation of Turkish businessmen on Saturday visited the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) to explore investment opportunities with special focus on supporting the private sector development of the country, a statement said.

“The private sector development would be supported by promoting economic cooperation between the business sectors of the two countries,” Veysel Ciftci, head of Turkish business delegation, said, while talking to businessmen.

The Turkish investors are well aware of the fact that there are ample opportunities available to them in various sectors of the Pakistan economy, he said.

The two countries have marvelous untapped business potential that needs to be realised by maximising the involvement of the private sectors of the two countries, he said.

Turkish Chief Commercial Counsellor Cezmi Besogul said that there is a dire need to reduce tariff barriers, which would ultimately enhance trade.

There is also a need to create preferential trade relation between the two countries, he said. He stressed upon the need to constructing link roads and railway tracks between the two countries and establishment of banks in each others country to promote strategic relation.

The Turkish delegates expressed interest in promoting trade and economic relations and also showed interest in putting a sizeable investment in Pakistan.

In his address of welcome, Asad Farid, Senior Vice President, ICCI, said that Turkey is a time-tested strategic partner of Pakistan as the two nations maintain extensive commercial, strategic and military cooperation.

The initiatives should be taken to achieve the bilateral trade target of $2 billion by 2012 through speedy formulation of a strategic economic cooperation framework.

Farid said that tremendous investment opportunities are available in the power, oil and gas, mining, textile, agriculture and financial sectors.

The ICCI senior vice president said that the exchange of business delegations could be a better option for exploring areas of common interest.

Shahid Zaman Shinwari, Vice President, ICCI, said that the two countries should go for joint ventures and also study each others’ market to look at the possibilities of joining hands in various sectors.
