ANKARA- The militaries of Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan have launched week-long joint military exercises to improve their anti-terror capabilities, Turkish military officials here said.

The wide-ranging, multitask exercises began March 25 in an infantry school in Tuzla, near Istanbul, they said. This is the first time the three countries have held a trilateral exercise on Turkish soil.

"The exercise basically aims to improve coordination between the three militaries with a view to future anti-terrorism tasks," the military official said. Dozens of Afghan and Pakistani infantry troops are participating.

A Turkish diplomat said that the decision to hold the exercises was made at the conclusion of the 5th Trilateral Summit among the three countries last December.

The joint exercise involves military operations in urban terrain (MOUT) against terrorists. The events scheduled include basic and battle order training, MOUT demonstration by the Turkish Army, combat order, training controls, fighting in built up areas, and handmade explosives training sessions. Specialist teams of the three countries comprising sniper and anti-tank detachments are taking par.

The Turkish diplomat said that the exercises are part of Turkey's diplomatic efforts to fight terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"It is our policy to support both friendly countries through restructuring and training programs rather than having a military presence in Afghanistan with combat tasks," the diplomat said.

Turkey has trained thousands of troops in Afghanistan since 2001. Several hundreds of Afghans also have attended Turkish war colleges and anti-terrorism courses. In addition, Turkey keeps 800 soldiers in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
