Turkey plans to modernise its four Preveze-class submarines. Source: US Navy
Turkey plans to modernise its Preveze (Type 209/1400)-class diesel electric submarines, according to the country's defence procurement body.
The Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) has issued a request for proposal (RfP) for the mid-life modernisation work, with bidders having to respond by 22 July.
Speaking to IHS Jane's on 22 June the SSM said that the submarines' existing electronic systems will be replaced with modern technologies and made up to date. The SSM defines the modernisation work as being a local development project.
The Preveze-class boats were built at Turkey's Gölcük shipyard between 1989 and 1994 under licence from Germany's Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft. Turkey is planning to eventually replace the Preveze-class with a locally designed submarine that it has scheduled to build in the 2030s.
Turkey currently operates 12 Type 209 submarines: the oldest and smallest are the five Type 209/1200 Atilay-class submarines; these were followed by the four Preveze (Type 209/1400)-class boats; and four later Type 209/1400 submarines known as the Gür-class.
