Turkey earthquake: Hundreds flee as new quake terror strikes
HUNDREDS fled for their lives last night as a major new tremor hit quake-ravaged Turkey.
Initial reports said at least three people had died, with dozens more injured.
Many buildings, including a six-storey hotel, already damaged in the 7.2 earthquake that killed more than 600 just 17 days ago, were reduced to rubble in the south eastern city of Van.
Up to 70 people, including aid workers and journalists, were staying there.
Rescuers used their bare hands to drag at least five from the rubble following the latest 5.7 quake.
Teams were sent to the region from the capital Ankara even as workers were still clearing debris from the earlier disaster.
AFRAID
About 1,400 aftershocks have rocked the region since the province was first hit on October 23.
Thousands of locals have been living in tents, despite the cold, too afraid to return to their damaged homes.
At least 2,000 buildings were destroyed and another 3,700 buildings declared unfit for habitation.
Late last night 11 people were reported to have been rescued alive from the new devastation.
Other panic-stricken survivors were seen running through the streets amid fears of further tremors.
Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu was visiting the nearby town of Ecris epicentre of last months quake when the latest tremor struck.
Last night all search and rescue efforts, including 30 ambulance crews, were being diverted to Van.
