Early warning plane delayed

Turkey likely to seek penalties from Boeing
-Boeingââ¬â¢s B-737 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) plane
WASHINGTON - TDN Defense Desk :p
Boeing informed Turkish procurement and military officials that the delivery of the $1.6 billion AEW&C aircraft will face a delay of more than two years because of problems.
Boeing informed them that the first AEW&C plane's delivery, originally scheduled for next year, would be delayed by 26 months. The Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM), Turkey's defense procurement agency, likely will seek penalties for the delay under the contract, they said.
An airborne early warning system is basically radar carried by an aircraft that is designed to detect other planes.
Boeing officials confirmed the delay, saying the program had proved to be a "greater challenge than anticipated." But Boeing officials said the company was committed to delivering this key capability to the Turkish Air Force. All related sides, including Boeing and the SSM, will now be working on a fresh schedule for the delayed program. Procurement officials and analysts said that the talks would also include a discussion of penalties, a clear clause in the contract.
