What's new

Traders and Government reach an agreement to end strike

The key issue as always is any serious attempt to document the black economy, which is liable to provoke a society-wide backlash, with all the consequences thereof, both domestic and international.

this obsession with 'documenting' the black economy will nothing but fail and destroy what little economic activity is left in the country

in india, the idiot modi banned cash to document the black economy,

result, india's growth rate fell from 7 to less than 4 percent

even if u do ban cash here in pakistan, there are now viable alternatives in the form of crypto currencies to settle trades and do business

Overall, documenting the black economy is a good thing, but in Pakistan it cannot be done simply because the vested interests against it are too strong.

It's the first step. If the economy was stronger the government probably could have pushed harder, but at this point this is better than nothing. Once you get the initial steps in place, get the documentation in order (get more traders registered etc). it'll be easier to increase the rates down the road.

I am surprised the champions of elected government PPP & PMLN have never thought about these things....but they got the PhD in money laundering.

I think some city can pass the ordinance that every vendor in the city must registered to do any business. For example, in new York every street vendor is registered with city government and they are provided special TAG to do business. I think Bahria town Karachi should be a separate city with it’s own government. It shouldn’t be part of Karachi. They need to implement city ordinances and test it out.
