Tourism sector sees steady growth in last 3 years

ISLAMABAD: The tourism sector has registered a steady growth both in tourists’ arrival and revenue generation during the last three years.

The number of foreign tourists who visited Pakistan was 822,800 in 2008 and 85,4900 in 2009, registering a modest 4 percent increase, Tayyab Mir of Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) said on Friday.

Foreigners, who visited to Pakistan for travel purpose, accounted for 14 percent of the total tourists. Some 56 percent were Pakistanis with dual nationalities, Indians, or Afghans also are considered to be tourists while people visiting the country for business purposes were 26 percent - and 6-7 percent were students and others.

Revenue generated through tourism in 2008 was $243.5 million and $240.6 million in 2009, which was 1.2 percent less than the previous year. Domestic tourism accounted for $45.5 million in 2008 and $46.8 million in 2009, an increase of 3.0 percent.

Total receipts through miscellaneous heads including royalty fee (Rs 20.173 million and Rs 15.171 in 2008 and 2009) were Rs 27.357 million and Rs 23.403 million in 2008 and 2009 - showing a 14 percent decrease.

Ministry of Tourism earned Rs 60.618 million as registration fee from different travel agencies and hotels. It also prepared the draft of New Tourism Policy, which was ready for the approval of cabinet. The ministry has also organised seven inter-provincial conferences besides taking part in 10 seminars/tours/media trips/events.

The government initially announced Rs 170.484 million for 11 projects in the tourism sector in 2009-10, but drastically cut this budget to Rs 100 million.

So far, the ministry has only been able to get Rs 73.564 million that cast negative bearings on the execution of developmental projects in tourism sector.

Registered hotels were 1,857 in 2008 that were reduced to 1,706 in 2009 mainly because of downward trend in business, floods or terrorism. Travel agencies in 2008 were 2261 that were increased to 2303 in 2009.

The government has announced visa-on-arrival to the tourists of 24 tourist-friendly countries provided they come in the shape of groups and through registered tour operators of their respective countries.

The PTDC has distributed 117,000 broachers to all Pakistani missions abroad, NGOs, government departments, tourists and other stakeholders. The broachers depicted Pakistan’s tourism attractions and information about country’s fabulous destinations.

A total of 9807 passengers travelled by Friendship Bus Service to New Delhi, Nankana Sahib and Amritsar.

Up to 1912 passengers travelled by Pak-China Bus Service while 350 persons travelled with the buses, which the PTDC ran from Rawalpindi to Naran-Kaghan in 2008-09. app
