ISLAMABAD: Pakistan “forced” India at the foreign secretary-level talks in New Delhi to reconsider its position on the merits of the composite dialogue and implicitly accept centrality of the Kashmir dispute to Indo-Pak ties.

A senior diplomat – who was part of the official delegation that visited New Delhi for the talks on February 25 – said Pakistan had also handed over a “dossier” on the distribution of water and made it clear to India that it would not accept “Indian water hegemony”.

“We did a lot of tough talking during the meeting, and convincingly put forward our position on all issues of importance ... [we] made it clear that we will not accept dictates on the terms of bilateral engagements,” said the diplomat.

He said Pakistan also tabled a “roadmap” for the resumption of the peace process, persuading India to realise and publicly admit that the peace process had a lot of good things to offer.

The diplomat said India was trying to wriggle out of the five-year composite dialogue by altering the mechanics of the terms of the peace process, but “Pakistan made it clear that it was unacceptable”.

About the three dossiers handed over by India, the diplomat said the foreign secretary had already branded the documents “literature” which had nothing to do with evidence on the Mumbai attacks or terrorism. He said the foreign secretary also told his Indian counterpart that Islamabad would not be a party to “meaningless” dialogue or any other process “limited to photo sessions”. He said India had been told that all future engagements should be purposeful.

Replying to a question, he accepted that the Indian delegation was “obsessed with terrorism” and tried to make the February 25 session “a one-point agenda meeting”.

“We were well prepared, as we knew India would try to make it look like a meeting focused on terrorism, so we made well-timed interventions to make the interaction all encompassing,” he said.

The diplomat rejected the impression that Pakistan had been trapped by India to highlight New Delhi’s concerns over terrorism, and said, “They will soon find themselves caught in their own trap ... their media is already highlighting it.”

He said India lacked seriousness and failed to reciprocate Pakistan’s honesty in discussing all issues and finding mutually acceptable solutions.

usual chest thumping and Egotism...:hitwall:

indian gov rightly replied to this foreign secretary's press conference...."just a point scoring conference"

The below is taken from an article of respected "The Hindu"....

If pressed, reporters present might have used the adjective ‘rambling’ to describe his lengthy responses but some Indian officials insisted on characterising Mr. Bashir’s briefing as “acrimonious” and full of “point scoring”. :taz:

Read the report...its really funny the way they described Mr.Bashir conference and indian officials reponse...:bunny:

The Hindu : News / National : India, Pakistan take step forward, but potholes remain

Diplomats are suppose to do tough talking inside the meeting room and outside cater to media, either he failed as a diplomat or his intentions was to stall the peace process.

It seems India is keen to buy a pair of running shoes while it still has to learn to walk, hence it's adamant to peruse a trade policy without addressing the main issues.
As for point scoring, we are well accustomed to the Indian behavior pattern like the disaster with the staged Maulana during an earlier debacle. This time however, the Indian drama queens couldn't resist staging a set up with a couple of Sikh men.
Sheer bad professional misconduct.:disagree::tdown:

School boyish attitudes.

I feel both Ind & Pak achieved their objectives. One to prove the point that 'well.. we tried..' & the other to play to the gallery .

Deja Vu...........!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least they are talking. As long as the talks don't focus only on terrorism inside India, which clearly they haven't, things look positive.

Regardless of what they say outside the doors, at least inside they are speaking about the issues. And Kashmir was discussed "briefly" is as big a piece of bullsh*t as I've heard in my entire life. Kashmir would have occupied, at the very least, a third of the talks. Otherwise the Pakistani delegation would have refused to continue the shambolic "talks about talks". To save face, they had to say it was discussed "briefly", otherwise their media would have burnt them aline.

The fact that they've decided to meet means they've reaches some sort of preliminary decision that satisfies both parties. We've already won the big battle, we got them to the table, getting them to talk about all the issues should be easy.

Hence, it only goes to prove, if proof were needed, as who was playing to the audience.

The tragedy is we don't know for sure who is running the show in India, Pakistan's former President Pervez Musharraf is on record for disclosing that Indian PM M M Singh had agreed to settle the Indian Occupied Kashmir issue but the HAWKS had their day.

yet they want access to our road and highway networks. Flip floppy types. What a waste of time.

Indians have a lot more to lose from cutting off relations, political babu's there understand it but the junta does not and its very tragic for any Indian regime. Because each time diplomatic relations are called off, it ticks the indo-pak clock back by 5 years if not more. And India has the most to lose out of this equation, the international community looks at it as a diplomatic failure and a joke, thereby effectively eroding its image as well as dreams of becoming a regional power.

hmm.. gets a lot more to "rattle" India than tough talks.
Pakistan feels today that it has the upper hand in these talks. It feels it "coerced" India into these talks. I think Pakistan needs to go beyond point scoring talk of water hegemony etc.

Pakistan is acting like an enemy of India. If it refuses to cooperate over terrorism and other issues that India has, how can it accept India to give concessions to Pakistan ? Does anyone give concessions to an enemy ?

First it is important to become friends. Only then can issues be solved. The friendship needs to be unconditional. Ever heard of a relationship between two people in which one person says that I will be our friend if you give me this this and this ? Pakistan needs to realise that it is not Kashmir that is central - it is their mistrust toward India and Indians.

Well as PafAce said, at least they are talking and talking about issues that matter to both the countries.

Regarding point scoring and playing to the gallery, it doesn't matter. Lets see where the talks lead us.

India don`t want PEACE with Pakistan.
Because this not into the favor of India as well.

After all, pr today its GOLDEN chance for RAW & India do destabilize Pakistan since Pak is in trouble like Suicide Attacks, Bomb Blasts, US Drone Attacks, US & India threats to Pakistan etc . . . .

Why India will have peace full talk with Pakistan, when their dream become true like what they wanted or wants to look like a Pakistan according to their wish.

Come out of ur wet dreams, no matter how weak pakistan become it will not bow against India.

So why India want a unstable Pakistan when both can progress side by side but ego and hypocrisy should be kept aside.
