Srinagar: Top Kashmiri separatist leaders have refused the government’s offer to provide them security in the wake of senior cleric Maulana Showkat Ahmad Shah’s assassination two days ago, police said Sunday.

A high-level review was taken of the increased threat perception to separatist leaders following Shah’s killing in a bomb blast here Friday.

"A review was taken of the increased threat perception to the local separatist leaders in the wake of Maulana Showkat’s murder," a senior police official told IANS here. "Accordingly, we have offered security cover to separatist leaders, but it is up to them, whether they accept it or not."

The official also said Muhammad Yasin Malik, chairman of the Pro-Azadi Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF); Shabir Ahmad Shah, chairman of the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP); and Syed Ali Geelani, chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat group, had refused to accept the security cover.

’Discreet security’ has been provided to some separatist leaders by the authorities here and guards are posted at the residences of some of them.

"It is our duty to provide security to the separatist leaders and it is their choice whether they accept it or not," S.M. Sahai, inspector general of police Kashmir, told a local newspaper here when asked about the increased threat perception to separatist leaders in the wake of Shah’s killing.

Shah had been provided personal security officers (PSOs) by the authorities after he received hate mails and threats because of his rejection of "stone pelting as a means of peaceful resistance".

He was killed when an IED, placed on a bicycle outside the Jamiat-e-Ahlihadith mosque in Gaw Kadal area adjacent to city centre Lal Chowk, went off as soon as Shah reached the spot and was about to enter the mosque for Friday prayers. The blast was so powerful that the building sustained major damage.

Well if LET and Pakistan can target leaders that don;t fit their criteria, India should take out the hardliners..

India doesn't have to do anything other than just sit on things in Kashmir and develop Kashmir's economy. As Kashmir's economy develops and the youth finds jobs and productive work to do, support for these madmen and their fantasies will only decrease with time.

The hooliganism will die on its own.

right of self determination is the ultimate solution.

It was probably a way to put a check on the Seperationist leadership by India, who is trying to prove that as if she has got nothing to do with the assassination.

Lol, who would kill those 'separatist leaders'? They obediently tow a line acceptable to their handlers and hardliners, they are such imbeciles that they cannot even build up a ground level consensus as to what actually their demands should be and cannot even properly guide their youth but yet are called "leaders"! An apt oxymoron if ever there was one. India doesnt need to bother about such idiots.
Its only the moderate, sane voices which over the years have been stifled by hardliners!

it may be an attempt to make segments of the Kashmiri society to fight with each other....yet utterly failed one.

Even Pakistanis don't have the right to self-determination nowadays it seems.
...Ironical, isn't it?

Kashmir is a issue related with Partition, we are not talking about Hyderabad, junaghar etc etc...

You need to realize that Kashmir is NOT related to Partition. Kashmir was an independent princely state when India and Pakistan became independent! It was Pakistan who precipitated this conflict by deciding to send in irregulars and then the army to attack and annex Kashmir!

Can you indians be ever honest with Kashmir?
Did he really said that?
