Tonnes of tomatoes 'wasted' for fun fest in Vadodara, locals fume

Youths in Vadodara on Sunday celebrated 'LaTomatina' to mark the Friendship Day, perhaps unmindful of the fact that price of the commodity has soared to Rs. 100 per kg in markets.

The local 'La Tomatina' event (in which participants hurl tomatoes and get involved in the tomato fight) was organised at a private farm house, located on Sama-Savli Road on the outskirts of the city.

"The tomato hurling festival was organised for enjoyment and youths from Surat, Vadodara and neighbouring Vallabhvidya Nagar participated in it," said organiser of the event who identified himself only as Abhishek.


However, the local 'La Tomatina' event did not go down well with many, including former minister and the chairman of the Gujarat Civil Supply Corporation Bhupendra Lakhawala.

"Tomatoes should not have been wasted like this as it is a very costly vegetable, priced at Rs. 100 per kg in the market today," he said.

According to estimates, three tonne of tomatoes were used in this event which lasted two hours, where every participant was charged an entry fee of Rs. 300.

One of the participants said that those who took part in the event had no regrets.

Meanwhile, many citizens have demanded a stern action against the organisers and also the participants for "wasting" precious tomatoes.

Necessity is mother of all invention ...when food price rises everyone create noise ..so many farmers committed suicide last decade then too all created noise ...there is corelation between two ...i never heard anybody weeping for farmer when 10 rs fetches 3 kg ...who cares ? But when farmer starts to get his due share everyone starts to pressurise govt to lower price ..no youngster now dreams about farming ..fertile land left abandoned not because lack of human power but because it will be loss in monetary terms for farmer ...let the price rise ...let production and demand ballance out each other ...let the demand for agri product rise ...i dont care if it is fun or food that gives farmer his due ..

Which is why we had the khap panchayats, panchayats, councils of elders etc...but secular are busy trying to destroy of ayything that safeguards our value systems.

Modi and his govt. is already aware of the wastage by FCI and has spoken extensively about it. It is more important to stop smaller one's like these. Its like shaming people when they urinate on the walls.

The farmer never gets his due, its the middle man who makes the money during food price inflation.

Price rise should be natural, not artificial due to hoarding or speculative trading on food items in commodity exchanges.

Get educated on how the system works before offering suggestions.
