Shekar's response and Nietsze's analysis are pretty much what we all were given to understand about 1962. Ofcourse for 10 year olds it will be a simplified 'Chinese backstabbed us though peace loving chacha Nehru wanted nothing but peace harmony and Indo Chini Bhai bhai'.
I will add a few thoughts to it. While every country and nation has some past and history, the Mongols, the Hans, the Japanese and the Indians can claim comparable glory as their civilizations developed. China wants to keep these three in an actively engaged balance. Their pile of cash (though their books are full of bad writeoffs waiting to happen) and population give them a 15 to 20 year advantage over India. What the Chinese did not expect was somebody like Modi acting so swiftly ... I mean within weaks! ...to tie up the loose ends and making the USA-Japan-India strategy. They even tried that crude maneuver of incursion during Xi trip! They also saw the Srilankan transformation - that one was done with such lightning speed ! - and realized Modi and Obama have at least for now checked them in this theatre.
India is trying to build up Myanmar and Vietnam; China is trying to build up Pakistan. If things get rough the rough stuff will happen in these proxies rather than in the principal lands
