Three Pak ships, submarine call at Muscat port
Tuesday, March 25, 2008
MUSCAT Three Pakistan Navy ships Muhafiz, Gwadar, Jurrat and a submarine Hurmat arrived yesterday on a goodwill-cum-training visit to the Sultanate. PNS Gwadar is the first indigenous ship of PN fleet built by Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works. Commodore Shah Sohail Masood is the mission commander. He was commissioned in June 1981 in Pakistan Navy. Masood had joined the submarine service in 1986. He had also served at the Royal Saudi Naval Forces while on deputation and was promoted to the rank of commodore in July 2006.
The ship, named after the coastal city of Gwadar on the western side, was commissioned in 1984 as a harbour tanker to supply fuel and fresh water to small crafts. Later on, taking advantage of less freeboard and availability of crane onboard, ship was found suitable to undertake a variety of tasks such as torpedo recovery vessel during torpedo firing exercise, logistic support to coastal bases. Commander Masood-ul-Hassan PN commands the ship.
PNS Jurrat was originally the Type-24 missile boat acquired from China and commissioned by the Pakistan Navy in 1981. The boat was subsequently decommissioned in 2002. Keeping the steady pace of ship building in past few years, a new Fast Attack Craft (missile) with enhanced capabilities was launched in 2002 at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering works and subsequently commissioned in Pakistan Navy as PNS Jurrat.
This combatant can be utilised in a variety of roles like maritime interdiction operations, offensive operations against enemy surface vessels, missile attacks, air defence, coastal defence, ESM support, patrolling and SAR duties. Commanding Officer Commander Shafqat Ali got commission in the service in 1990.
PNS Muhafiz is an Eridan Class Tripartite Mine Hunter, the second of three mine hunters purchased from France. The keel was laid on July 8, 1995 and commissioned in Pakistan Navy on April 15, 1996. Since her commissioning, the ship has played a vital role in surveying areas of interests besides actively participating in exercises at home and with foreign navies. PNS Muhafiz is fitted with state-of-the-art mine hunting system and mine disposal system. Commander Chaudhry Gulzar Ahmad was commissioned in operation branch in 1991.
Hurmat means sanctity of the nation. Pakistan Navy Submarine Hurmat, an Agosta Class Submarine, was commissioned on February 18, 1980. Constructed at Nantes in France by Dubigeon Normandie, this ship is usually deployed in anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. It can be deployed in defence and power projection roles. It can enter the Barr Straits, shallow waters or choke point of passage and provide the early warning or exercise attrition. The submarine is equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and armed with potent missiles and torpedoes. Captain Abdul Mateen PN was commissioned in the Operations branch in 1986. After completion of his basic training onboard various PN units, he joined the Pakistan Navy Submarine Service in 1992.
