The composite brigade of an engineering and two infantry battalions will be joined by a Buet team for supervision

The Army is set to form three new battalions to supervise the construction work of the Padma bridge project.

An official of the finance ministry said the public administration ministry and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had already approved a proposal from the Armed Forces Division of the Prime Minister’s Office for forming a new engineering battalion and two infantry battalions.

The proposal also stated a plan for forming a new headquarters of the composite brigade.

The total yearly cost of running the three battalions and the headquarters was estimated at Tk621m, the official said. There will also be a revolving fund of Tk881m which the brigade will use to serve specific necessities.

Sources said the expenses for running the new brigade would be carried out from the budgetary allocation for the army.

Khandoker Anwarul Islam, secretary of the government’s Bridges Division, told the Dhaka Tribune they had also decided to involve a wing from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) for the supervision work.

He said the BUET team was needed because the army engineering core was not well enough equipped or manned to carry out the entire supervision by itself. The work includes checking the design of the Janjir`a and Mawa approach road to the Padma bridge.

Government officials said the prime minister, terming the project a “priority,” had directed them to appoint the army and BUET jointly for taking forward the work.

According to the proposal, the Engineering Construction Battalion (ECB), one of the three new battalions, will assist in the construction of various other important development projects and disaster management initiatives in the country once its work on the bridge is completed.

The ECB will be an 852-member force consisting of 27 officers and 825 non-commissioned officers of the army. The battalion will use 36 vehicles and 873 arms.

The two infantry battalions will have a total workforce of 1,480, consisting of 82 officers and 1,398 non-commissioned officers of the army. They will use 86 vehicles and 1,606 arms to ensure security and safety during the construction work.

The proposal said more recruits were needed for the two infantry battalions because the existing infantry division of the army did not have enough manpower to do additional work.

The proposal also said the composite brigade would need a separate headquartesr from where it would conduct the various planning, operation, training and administrative activities of the three new battalions. The headquarters will be allocated 10 motor vehicles and a total workforce of 123.

In April, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked the Bangladesh Army to assist in the construction of the Padma bridge.

Over the last few years, the army has successfully carried out the construction of a number of development projects in the country including the Hatijheel scheme in the capital.

In January last year, the Bangladesh Diesel Plant Ltd (BDP), a commercial enterprise managed by the army, was awarded the work to complete the remaining construction work of the Patakhali Closure in Satkhira. The project was aimed at preventing brackish water from entering arable lands.

The water resources ministry commissioned BDP to develop land for the 1320 MW Indo-Bangla joint venture power plant in Rampal of Bagerhat.

The communications ministry last year announced that the army would be tasked with expanding the 40km Joydevpur-Mawa road on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway. The sudden announcement came at a time when the Roads and Highways Department was assessing tenders submitted by various companies.
