Some politicians have a knack of making bizarre statements and demands. In yet another unconventional and weird move, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut put forth a demand suggesting all poultry products like eggs, along with chicken meat, be classified as 'vegetarian'. The Rajya Sabha MP made the demand in the upper house during a discussion on the benefits of ayurveda, a report in the Mumbai Mirror said.

The senior parliamentarian reportedly said the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha & Homoeopathy (AYUSH) should take a call on whether chicken is vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

"Once I had gone to a small hamlet in Nandurbar region. The adivasi people came and served us food. When I ask them what was it, they said it was an ayurvedic chicken. They also said that they take care of it in such a way that after (eating) you will get rid of all illness," he was quoted to as saying by Mumbai Mirror.
Netizens were obviously amused by the demands and they took to Twitter to make themselves heard with some coming up with hilarious responses.

. . . . . . . . .
House grown chickens which when eaten with proper amount of spices can cure cold overnight. I had one in a tribal hamlet in Coorg with very bad cold and in cold climate having to sleep in a tent in camping and yet was cured the next morning.
But there is nothing "Ayurvedic" about it. Nor it is vegetarian. House grown chickens are always healthy.

Not industrial poultry.

Raut saheb is a highly respected leader. What he says is culturally very normal in Maharashtra.

Most konkansta Brahmins don't consider fish as non-vegetarian at all.

Similarly their more inland brothers the dehshasta don't consider having chicken or eggs as being non-vegetarian.

They draw the line mainly at mutton, especially in the cuisine native to the Kolhapuri and Nagpuri schools.

My wife if Maharashtrian. She says she's vegetarian ... "but I only eat prawns".

Cheers, Doc

Mr. Raut should be commended because egg is a very nutritious food that should be part of the mid-day meals program in schools.

We don't believe in North Indian vegetarian chutyapa.
