THIS IS NO TIME FOR FEAR. ISLAMIC STATE MUST BE CRUSHED
16TH NOVEMBER 2015
We need to learn lessons from the 2004 Madrid attack
Article published in The Times, 16 November 2015. © Richard Kemp

The 2004 bomb attack in Madrid that killed 191 people was a strategic victory for jihadists that went far beyond the carnage on Spain’s rail network. Al-Qaeda could boast that they had changed the outcome of the general election that followed and forced Spanish troops out of Iraq. This became a cornerstone of propaganda for jihadists everywhere and an incalculable boost for al-Qaeda recruitment and funding.

After Friday’s attack in Paris there will be a desire within France for similar appeasement of Islamic State. We hear already the predictable faint-hearted warnings from those who are terrified of provoking jihadist rage by striking back.

Of course jihadists react violently to aggression against them. But the choice is to fight or to submit to terror. In the face of
blood-lust and subjugation, the cause is worth the casualties. In any case, Isis has declared war on our countries, and will
attack us whatever we do.

It is imperative that France does not succumb to the fear that cowed the Spanish electorate. They should immediately intensify air attacks in Iraq and Syria. But this is not enough. Isis must be eradicated and France cannot do it alone, or with the coalition that has won limited success with half-hearted attacks.

After 9/11 the US invoked Article 5 of the Nato treaty, which calls on every member to aid a nation under armed attack. As Manuel Valls, the French prime minister, said this weekend: “We have been hit by an act of war, organised methodically by a terrorist, jihadist army.”

Now is the time for concerted Nato action to eradicate Isis. Nato, and its regional allies, must deploy powerful ground and air forces against Isis strongholds in Syria and Iraq.

If the West fails to act decisively, Isis will continue to gain in strength in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. It will continue to recruit and train jihadists from around the world, some of whom will travel to western countries to attack us.

Opinion polls reveal the frightening extent of support for Isis among Muslims everywhere. In the terms used by Osama bin Laden, Isis is the “strong horse”, making a heroic — and successful — stand against the West and apostate Muslim nations.

This support is vital to Isis’s international recruitment as well as its capability to strike at the West. The weakness of Isis must be demonstrated by overwhelming force, and jihadists who wish to destroy our societies shown that we will still fight for our values and freedoms.

Dick (Richard) Kemp has no credibility, he's an IDF mouthpiece:

Kemp also claimed to have relied on Israeli expertise in Afghanistan. He said he received help from an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) anti-suicide bombing expert and the Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency, following the 2005 London bombings. Kemp was highly critical of the "automatic assumption that everything the IDF does is illegal." He said "there is harsh criticism against the US and British armies as well, but they are given the benefit of the doubt. Israel is always automatically condemned, no matter what. It's a joke. Even the conspiracy theory that the one responsible for the 11 September attacks is not al-Qaedabut Israel refuses to die out, it's unbelievable".

...

Asked about his pro-IDF point of view, Kemp responded: "I consider myself as having an objective view of what's happening over here. The IDF does not need me to defend them; they have proven it over the years," he said. "It's the dispassionate military perspective that I bring." Regarding media bias, he said: "It was clear to me that there was a great deal of propaganda that was being generated against Israel, and then being exploited by people who didn't understand military matters and didn't want to question it, it suited their agenda to vilify Israel."

What's next from you, an OP ED from Netanyahu?

Ah, a poster child for those who claim that Islamists who arrive in the West only use the internet to reinforce their prejudices and warped mindset, rather than challenge them.

Mods please confirm AnABCD? isn't my sock puppet, thanks!

Well unfortunately for you, I didn't arrive here, I was born and raised in the US with acute awareness of the b.s. Zionist Jews like you spew to spin an agenda. Posting IDF mouthpiece op eds isn't fooling anyone.

Sure sure, that's why Pew Research completely disproved that boloney with extensive research and polling done in 2007 and 2011. Keep on trying Solomon.

From Pew Research:
As the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaches, a comprehensive public opinion survey finds no indication of increased alienation or anger among Muslim Americans in response to concerns about home-grown Islamic terrorists, controversies about the building of mosques and other pressures that have been brought to bear on this high-profile minority group in recent years. There also is no evidence of rising support for Islamic extremism among Muslim Americans.

On the contrary, as found in the Pew Research Center’s 2007 survey, Muslims in the United States continue to reject extremism by much larger margins than most Muslim publics surveyed this year by the Pew Global Attitudes Project. And majorities of Muslim Americans express concern about the possible rise of Islamic extremism, both here and abroad.

Israel wants Europe and the US to have a bigger presence in Syria not to defeat ISIS but to reinforce their previously unfettered ability to strike anywhere in the Golan Heights and Syria.

Now with Russia patrolling the skies, they can't do that anymore and are using tragedies like the French bombing to spin an agenda and take advantage of the West. It doesn't bother them how much Western blood spills, as long as it strengthen's Israel's interests and expansion--that's what Goyim are good for.

And the problem is that the "b.s. Zionist Jews" make far more sense, far more often, than anti-Zionists, yes?

Non sequitur. ISIS didn't exist in 2011.

They only make sense in your convoluted mind. ISIS began well before 2010 by Baghdadi, only it went by a different name and then in 2011 it came into fruition. Try again.

Eradication might be desirable, but not necessary. Containment within the ME will probably work out better and more achievable.

How would containment be more achievable?

They weren't OBL's proverbial "strong horse" until 2013 or 2014. Try again.

The Pakistanis here can cite reasons for not advocating Israel: ignorance, fear of militants, official edicts by school officials, and so on.

You, on the other hand, claim to be an American, so what excuse can you cite? What sort of respect do you deserve? Why aren't you spending the majority of your time pointing out the foolishness and fallacies of the Israel-haters? Why aren't you pointing out to the Israel-haters the long and intimate link of the Jewish people to their homeland, that the last Caliph but one endorsed their return to it, that Jews bought land from Arabs at great price that these same Arabs then tried to take back by force after the British were gone? That, in short, it is the Jews of Israel who are on the side of peace and justice and their Arab enemies who stand for evil and theft?

By claiming to be an American, you can't claim cowardice or ignorance as an excuse, AnABCD. What you can claim to be is an antisemite - and by choosing to be HERE, that means your primary intended victims are Pakistanis, not Jews. You should apologize to them for trying to mess up their minds and keep them in violence and squalor, rather than helping liberate them from unjustifiable violence and fears.

I think it's too simplistic to say, crush ISIS. Ultimately, it's really a battle of the minds & hearts. Moderate & forward thinking Muslims looking to build a modern society in the ever advancing & globalised world, vs fanatic diehards still stuck in the Middle Ages. I believe that if the West keeps pounding ISIS, the seed of vengence will grow deeper, very bad situation indeed. Modern Muslims needs to be at the forfront of this struggle, but the sectarian violence & geopolitics turned it into a stinking quagmire...
