Mullah Omar, the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, has a free reign to travel around Pakistan, it would seem.

An American newspaper, quoting unnamed US intelligence sources, say the mysterious leader is in Karachi, and travelled there under the wing of Pakistani Intelligence.

The news has ruffled feathers here, drawn a strong response from Pakistan's Government denying the claim, and local newspaper editorials condemn the report as baseless.

But in America the story is getting some play. One senior adviser to the white house, Bruce Riedel spoke to me via email and suggested that it would make sense for a man who knows he is being hunted to hide. "Omar practices extraordinary operational security. He and the Taliban Shura (and ISI) know the NATO command has focused on Quetta so it would make sense to find another hideout, at least temporarily."

So, he could well be in hiding in Pakistan's commercial capital. Many in the US administration simply do not trust the Pakistani's when it comes to the Taliban. They feel that Pakistan has an agenda that is out of step with US interests. The news could simply be a way of putting pressure on Pakistan to dance to the US's beat.

But the news does throw up some interesting questions, Does Pakistani Intelligence support the leader of the Afghan Taliban?

Mullah Omar is intensely private man, very little information exists about him. He communicates with his commanders in Afghanistan via hand written notes, and keeps his inner circle small. In Quetta, The capital of Baluchistan Province, the general wisdom was that he was able to operate freely because of the loyal nature of the people. Strangers stand out in Quetta.

By moving to Karachi Mullah Omar is taking a risk. One would assume that The US has intelligence assets within Pashtun community, and size and nature of the city mean information leaks.

But if Pakistan's Intelligence sources are supporting Omar to the extent that they are willing to move him, then that is a game changer for the Taliban leader. The I.S.I's role in the Taliban's past is well documented, but what is less well understood is the role it plays in supporting the Afghan Taliban now. But why, when the countries army is involved a fierce battle with the Pakistani Taliban would the countries intelligence services support the Afghan Taliban? The answer is may well be simple.

India and America

Pakistan is growing increasingly worried that India has begin to support Afghanistan and eroded Pakistan's influence there. The is also a very real fear that the US will abandon Afghanistan soon. The Taliban then provide a natural buffer to that influence and by supporting Mullah Omar you gain leverage. Omar comes from the countries Pashtun majority who are interwoven ethnically with Pakistan so on the surface at least there seems to be a reason to support the cleric.

This double game is shrouded in mystery and telling fact from fiction is incredibly difficult. Much of the ideas in this blog I have gleaned from Intelligence sources, military contacts and analysts. It's incredibly difficult getting anybody to go on the record explaining whether the ISI support the Taliban or not.

But what is clear is this. Pakistan has a role to play in Afghanistan. Officially at least Pakistan supports the government of Afghanistan, but given the complicated nature of Afghan politics there are some in Pakistani officialdom who believe having an ace up your sleeve is not a bad idea, even if that ace is the Taliban.

These journalists need to give up. If he was in Quetta, why was CIA with all its agents in Pakistan never able to find him? To defer the blame, they shift the focus to Karachi and next Lahore or whatever.

If anyone wants to see proof of governments showing lies to the public and hiding the truth to further their interests, you have it infront of you right here.

They need to get a life. Of that is what has been happening then i would call it the fault of Americans not the Pakistanis since American president promised that he will go after high targets with or without Pakistan's wish. If he didn't attack Omer then it means, Omer is not traced down. All bluff and BS by who ever believe in this story

Bruse Reidel is the chicken little of all terrorism experts. the guy was of the opinion that the swat offensive would fail and then i heard him say the in waziristan the army is going to suffer heavy casualties and seeing the this taliban in the Punjab will rise up and suddenly pakistan will be under the control of the taliban.

Your link doesn't work. Goes to a photo of some guy but he doesn't look like Omar.:)

I'll try to dig it up but you might try to look around too. Always good to test links before or just after posting.

Funny responses. One attacks the journalist writing the article, another attacks the American government, and the last attacks Reidel.

Haqqani is in Miran Shah. Omar likely is in Balochistan or Sindh. It's not like you wouldn't hide him. After all, every day your own tribal citizen militants operating under the command of Hafez Gul Bahadur and Maulvi Nazir attack Afghanistan and ISAF/America so preventing enemies of Afghanistan from using your lands isn't something any of you have worried about. If so, the recent attacks in S. Waziristan would include those militias who are right in the same area.

The Pakistani army hasn't lifted a finger against those militias.

Says it all about the government and army of Pakistan.

Omar is no different and you'd might as well admit it. Why would he stay in Afghanistan where at any time special operations forces could descend on helicopter right on top of him if we pinpoint him? Makes no sense at all.

That's a young man's war in Afghanistan. That one-eyed, gimpy goat has no business in A-stan when his azz is too important to risk and his face attracts so much donation money from the gulf states and KSA.

Sanctuary is an accepted fact of life that will always keep America from trusting Pakistan. Further, until then PREDATOR flies and Pakistanis can all be assured as to the reasons-Haqqani, Omar, Hekmatyar, Nazir, Bahadur, OBL, etc.

It'll be interesting to watch the evolution of sanctuary in Afghanistan for the Pakistani taliban. As ISAF surrenders the rugged lands of Nuristan and Konar, your afghan taliban proxies will fill the vacuum.

So too their Pakistani brothers from the TTP. They're no more fools than is Omar. Far the easier to sit in protected comfort behind the border of another nation and carry on their war than to be exposed to the daily grind in SWA.

all these assumptions are so fascinating. omar in quetta and then omar in karachi. tomorrow we ll find omar in ISI HQ.
now the question to ask is that wat evidence do these masters of world tech. have to support their claim. have they ever seen him in pakistan. any pictures or something. any other detail. ever tapped his phone call. No? then wats all this fuss about. similar thing goes for Osama. No? then y cant i say that he is already dead. quite sure that u cant prove me wrong.
y havent u targeted him in last 3 yrs if he was in quetta? knowin how small it is, even i wont hide there. desperately lookin for a reason to strike balochistan. similar intentions as those of soviets. lets see if history repeats itself or this world lone superpower will finally find this so called 'quetta shura'.

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. - Joseph Goebels
