Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020: results announced

Mainland China has increased its dominance in Times Higher Education’s latest ranking focused on developing countries, but South Africa and Saudi Arabia outshine the country based on average performance.

The People’s Republic claims 14 places in the top 30 of the THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020, up from 12 last year, including all of the top four places. Tsinghua University remains number one, while Peking University is second, Zhejiang University is third and the University of Science and Technology of China is fourth.

Russia, Taiwan and South Africa are the only other territories that feature in the top 10.

Mainland China is also the most-represented nation overall, with 81 institutions, against India’s 56 and Brazil’s 46.

The Emerging Economies University Rankings includes only institutions in countries classified by the London Stock Exchange’s FTSE Group as “advanced emerging”, “secondary emerging” or “frontier”.

However, South Africa is the top performer based on countries’ average overall score among institutions in the top 200. The African country achieves an average score of 41.3 out of 100, while Saudi Arabia, which joined the ranking for the first time after gaining “secondary emerging” status in the FTSE list last year, is second with a score of 40.3. Mainland China is third with a score of 39.3. Only institutions with at least five universities were included in the analysis.

Saudi Arabia is also home to the top new entrant in the table – King Abdulaziz University at 13th place.

Elsewhere, Brazil continues to decline in the ranking this year, although its flagship University of São Paulo bucks the trend, claiming 14th place (up from 15th last year).

The Emerging Economies University Rankings is based on the same 13 performance indicators used for the THE World University Rankings, but the weightings are different to reflect the development priorities of universities in emerging economies.

Overall, 533 universities from 47 countries or regions are included in the ranking.

The US is still ahead of China in general. But what the use of Oxford and Cambridge degrees nowadays? Economic? Finance? Engineering? Politics? I still do not understand.

Of all these disciplines, the UK is miles behind China, so its knowledge and experience is not worth to study. Unlike 1940s, its political system is dilapidated and no one wants to copy (which is different to China's).

The merit of studying in these old institutions used to be that, by doing so, you could make friends with world's top students and it could help in your future career. But nowadays, it is not worth to befriend hippie and useless princes like those in British royal family, compared to children of billionaire in China. The Chinese will decide the world future, not UK.

Beijing university overtakes MIT in two US News & World Report subject rankings.

One of China’s elite educational institutions, Tsinghua University in Beijing, is the world’s top school for both engineering and computer science, authoritative ranking survey U.S. News & World Report announced Tuesday.

While Tsinghua has previously held U.S. News’ top spot for engineering, this marks the first time the school has overtaken the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to be named the world’s best in computer science. Tsinghua was also ranked sixth in materials science and 10th in chemistry.

Other Chinese universities to be ranked highly for engineering include the Harbin Institute of Technology at No. 6 and Zhejiang University at No. 7. Zhejiang University also made the global top 10 in computer science, behind ninth-ranked Hangzhou University of Science and Technology.

U.S. News & World Report evaluated 1,250 universities in 74 countries for its 2018 rankings. The top four overall spots went to U.S. institutions Harvard University, MIT, Stanford University, and the University of California–Berkeley, in that order, with the U.K.’s Oxford University rounding out the top five.

Tsinghua, meanwhile, ranked fourth in Asia behind two Singaporean universities and the University of Tokyo, and 64th overall, just ahead of Beijing rival Peking University.

“The schools that rank the highest in the Best Global Universities rankings are those that emphasize academic research, including by partnering with international scholars to produce highly cited articles,” said Robert Morse, chief data strategist for U.S. News, in the company’s press release.

For its 2018 global rankings, U.S. News said it placed greater emphasis on international collaboration, rewarding schools that partnered with their foreign peers to write and publish papers. Other variables considered for the company’s rankings methodology include research reputation, number of publications, and citation frequency.

Tsinghua University did not immediately respond to Sixth Tone’s interview request on Wednesday.
