ISLAMABAD: Ambassador of Germany to Pakistan, Dr Cyrill Nunn called on the Federal Minister for Water and Power, Ch. Ahmed Mukhtar on Thursday and discussed various matters of mutual interest and bilateral cooperation, a statement said.

The minister briefed him on the current energy situation, steps being taken to overcome the energy crisis and future plan of action to produce cheaper electricity from hydel, coal, wind and solar resources, it said.

The minister said that the existing thermal plants of 4,200MW will be converted into imported coal from furnace oil to produce cheaper energy and the process will be completed in 16 months.

The wind projects of 250MW are also under construction and start generation shortly, he said, adding that the government is utilising all resources to bridge the gap between the demand and supply.

The ambassador thanked the minister and said that German companies are already working in the power sector of Pakistan and a number of others are keen to invest in the renewable energy projects.

A conference is being organised in Munich on September 11 on “Renewable energy in Pakistan”, which will be participated by German companies, businessmen and investors from both the countries to explore potential and other related matters of mutual cooperation, he said.

The conference will help set a roadmap to develop renewable energy in Pakistan with the German cooperation, said the ambassador.

The consulate offices of Germany located in Islamabad and Karachi are being electrified with solar energy as a model and work will be completed in the next six months, he said, and invited the minister to grace the occasion.

'Imported Coal'...! What happened to our coal reserves ?
Our coal reserves are not suitable for mining. Only can be used for gasification (on site)

BTW, I don't think that Pakistan has any "singular" generator of 4.2GWe capacity, does it? Or is it the total thermal generation capacity they're referring to?

Please enlighten me how you can convert furnace oil fired plants to coal plants?

one is liquid and other is solid...not easy

I am hopeful that their conversion will work better and they must also look towards increasing the capacity as well as investing in Thar and Badin's coal along with the coal present in balochistan.

Every usless project in which they can make money is underway...............

Y didnt they provided money to Dr. Samarmand so that he can continue producing electricity on commercial scale from coal gasification coz they cannot have there pocket filled up with money so they shut down the project.........

Bureaucrats are the one who are damaging Pakistan more than TTP or US or other terrorists. They are cause of wrong policies and we Pakistanis have to suffer for their deeds.........

i thought pak has a lot of coal reserves of its own then why r u guy focussing on importing coal...

ek bewaqook quom ka gadha leader is qisim ki baten hi kar sakta hai. if you just google the trade of coal you can find that 90 to 95% coal is used for domestic purpose in the world and only 5% is traded among nations. There is a problem of commission in Pakistan which keep us utilizing local coal. if it is not suitable for some specific purpose, here comes the technology, like coal washing, bricking, desulpharizing etc. to make it useful in any purpose. But will not offer any commission to our dear minister.

When u r converting oil fired boiler to a coal fired one u need high calorific value coal for furnace stability which might not be available in pakistan. but it will be more cost efficient,so good decision for pakistan.

another wasted plan Imported Coal to fool Peoples

Imported coal??? Looks like this is a new way of doing corruption by the this corrupt PPP. It is up to the people of Pakistan to understand this now & hopefully the Scientist of Pakistan should come out & tell the people what evilness PPP is doing.
