You have to admire innovators like SpaceX. They aren't afraid of doing things from scratch. You don't see them being wimpy posers and using old Soyuz or Space Shuttle designs as a basis for their manned rockets. They use a clean slate design and make it work.

So yes, the European, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, and unfortunately the Russian (not the Soviet) need lots of work.

Why is China timid on manned launches...even the Russians have sent 120+ of their people into space (US 330+).
