The United States wants the people of Bangladesh to elect their leaders freely
5 July 2022, Tuesday, 9:53 p.m.

Last updated: 12:00 p.m.

The United States expects the people to freely elect their leader in Bangladesh's national elections in December 2023. In a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal two days ago, Ambassador Peter de Haas reiterated his country's commitment to global democracy.

Diplomats from 14 countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) met the EC at the Election Building in Agargaon on Sunday. The meeting was attended by British High Commissioner Robert Chatterton Dixon, European Union Ambassador Charles Whitley and US Ambassador Peter de Haas. Two days after the meeting, the US Embassy in Dhaka took up the issue on social media.

In a meeting with the chief election commissioner, Ambassador Haas reiterated the United States' commitment to global democracy, according to the embassy's official Twitter account today (Tuesday). He wished success to those who took great civic responsibilities in holding free and fair elections.

On the other hand, a picture of the meeting was posted on the embassy's verified Facebook page: On July 3, Ambassador Haas and other heads of diplomatic missions met with Chief Election Commissioner Habibul Awal. Democracy is the most enduring way for humanity to advance peace, prosperity and security. And the basis of democracy is election. The United States expects the people of Bangladesh to freely elect their leader in the upcoming national elections.

Meanwhile, Canadian High Commissioner Lily Nichols, who was present on the day of the meeting, said from her official Twitter account that "the international community is clearly watching to ensure free, fair and inclusive elections in Bangladesh."

BD depends on the USA for many things, especially the textile export market and diplomatic support.

BD must return to democratic traditions. For BD, Pakistan is no good example. BD is a peace-loving country that wants to develop the standard of its people by producing goods and foreign trade.

And, you know what Pakistan is. Can you claim it is a peace-loving country?

.
Did BD discover some oil reserves? :what:
Neither BD has discovered oil nor it needs vaderes to rule over the people. It needs an expanded textile market to earn a living and needs a democratic system to flourish.

Since the governing BAL vaderes are too strong an anti-democratic force, therefore, external pressure from the Western powers is needed to re-establish democracy.

America and others are supporting the efforts of re-democratization. BD people certainly do not want another North Korea here.

LMAO at Elect your leader freely
They should have given the example of Pakistan's current freely elected govt as a successful US project.

You better ask IK why did he visit Russia at a precarious time like the Russia-Ukraine war. Was it to trade in the Rouble with Russia, or to get oil?

What is your idea about the fall and killing of Saddam Hossain and Gaddafi? They were moving to replace the dollar with the Euro.

Your MPs did not like the IK policy and voted against him. It is democracy. Why do not see how many times there have been changes in the UK? All because of democracy.

BD has no reason to follow what IK did. But, it needs a strongly founded democracy.

Do the people of USA elect their leaders freely?

International observers refuse to certify U.S. presidential elections because of the voter suppression efforts and gerrymandering at grand scale.

so looks like hassina didn`t budge to US pressure and decided to hold bangla`s interests first..... US usually do this right after they get "NO" from the govt!

This is the first time I learned that the election in the USA is held at the midnight 12 hours before the election.

So, the US elections are the same as the BD election. Now, it is time for the BAL govt to strictly slap sanctions on the USA and declare the Biden govt illegal.

I suggest you Google US elections.

Democracy is further stifled by their Supreme Court striking down laws its white members don’t like.

Trump supporters invaded and ransacked their “capitol” because Trump lost the election.

Threatening to hang their VP hahaha

That is my understanding too. However, I believe the US won't be successful in a regime change in BD. It's not impossible but it's highly unlikely.
