TV drama on rural China's poverty alleviation transformation twice tops popularity chart
February 1, 2021
"Minning Town," a TV drama revolving around poverty eradication, has twice topped the weekly popularity chart for Chinese-language TV series on the review platform Douban.

Set in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region from the 1990s to the present day, the production shows how villagers from Xihaigu, one of the country's most uninhabitable areas, have triumphed over destitution under the guidance of China's poverty alleviation policies and with assistance from the coastal province of Fujian.

The Chinese title "Shan Hai Qing" roughly translates to "Mountain and Sea Love," which in itself implies the joining of hands by Ningxia and Fujian.

Produced by Daylight Entertainment, the company behind many popular Chinese TV dramas, the star-studded show soon became an online sensation and won praise from media outlets and internet users alike following its release on Jan. 12.

It has won the top spot on Douban's weekly popularity chart for Chinese-language TV series for a second time, boasting a rating of 9.4 out of 10 based on more than 150,000 reviews, according to the latest rankings.

We almost forgot how poverty stricken China was in the 1990's, especially in some remote rural regions, one family shared one pair of pants, whoever went out can have the pants.

. . .
Ethnic Kazakh girl, Rayzha Alimjan, lead actress in this TV drama, moved hundreds of million Chinese into tears.

Unfortunately international fans don't like this kind of Chinese dramas than the romance ones. Fact is only in these kind of dramas you can appreciate the actors/actresses acting skill.

Ever watched Korean Dramas? It's not about having romance scenes unappealing, some of the biggest successful K dramas and movies are Korean. It has to do with the script, acting, direction which are superior in K movies and dramas that standout.

Don't comment before you watched Chinese dramas. In China, Being K-drama fan is not something proud of. It means you are not mature enough. Chinese dramas are not so popular outside China because China didn't promote them to international market as S.Korea did.

This is my first time to hear the background music and I am immediately addicted to it. Now I found the song. The song's name is 星辰大海.

I've watched a fair amount of HK movies. even then many of them didn't match today's Korean, some Iranian movies (which not many people talk about these days) are way better than Hong Kong and Korean ones. I don't think anyone will be mature for Chinese movies, you can simply go by the international audience viewpoint rather than what you believe. Also, movies are things you should be able to relate to or complete imagination, so if you stick poverty alleviation on an international audience face it'll be cliched. It may very well work with niche consumers, it is the Chinese.

No one watches Hongkong movies/dramas now in China. HK movies/dramas were very popular in 90's. But they are long gone. You can not understand the level of Chinese movies/dramas by watching HK movies/dramas.

China now is the biggest movie and TV drama market in the world and will decide the future of this industry globally.

Yeah, I observed, no one really watched HK movies anymore. The standards have really gone down. That's why I said, I used to watch HK movies when they were good. Well certainly, I saw wolf warrior just to see what's all the fuss about and cringed through the entire movie.

You're right, I don't understand the level of Chinese movies, it's more oriented with your audience who may find it appealing.

Yeah. Wolf warrior is not so good. This war movie is better. Operation red sea. There are Hidi version clips in youtube.

I’ve never heard of these Chinese dramas. Meanwhile, the whole world is talking about the Loki series.
