I think this is symbolic. The Imperial Navy , it seems to me, is resurrected to almost par strength of her original potential. Before, in prior visits to Pearl Harbor, the Rising Sun would always be lowered upon entering Hawaii, out of respect. But i notice that now, there is a new stance by the JMSDF. I suppose this new policy change reflects a new organizational change for the Navy, and increased duty responsibilities , as well as a change in perception to war conflicts between Tokyo and Washington.

Pride in unfurling the colours of the Rising Sun. Why hide it? Right. Good to see this.

I hope our American friends see this as a positive development as well. @F-22Raptor @Technogaianist @gambit, @jhungary, et al.

I've always been amazed at some American military historians because many of them actually rebuild the real thing. Here's a video of an American historian who bought an original Mitsubishi A6M-5 Zero, kept in mint condition. He flies this regularly in --get this-- southern California, lol. Boy how i wish our boys wanted to fly over the California skies back int he day, i can only imagine. :)

Japan can do two things to counter Chinese arrogance:

- Establishing East Asia military alliance: Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan and Philippines, with Japan as leader
- Developing nuclear weapon and providing nuclear umbrella to other members

I am curious about why Japan uses sun as national symbol. As a northern country, there isn't much sunlight.

Japan is called the "land of the rising sun" because from China it appears that the sun rises from the direction of Japan. The Japanese people call their country "Nippon" or "Nihon," which literally translated means "source of the sun." It is loosely translated into English as "land of the rising sun."

There is nothing but the Pacific Ocean for miles beyond Japan, with nothing else visible from a continental view. The Chinese took in this view from the shoreline, which created the illusion that the rising sun came from Japan, earning the country the nickname. The name also indicates the location of Japan with relation to China. It is directly east of the Chinese coastline.

During Japan's early development, China had a large influence on the emerging Japanese culture. It is believed that the Japanese took the name Nihon for their country because of how the country was seen from a Chinese perspective. The Chinese gave Japan the name during the Sui Dynasty. The Japanese version of the name, Nippon, was officially adopted in documents and manuscripts during the Taika Reform in 645 AD. This provided a way to centralize the country's government rather than allow it to continue as a conglomeration of privately owned lands.

So you see @nang2 , there is a deep interconnectedness between China and Japan in the Japanese identity genesis. We derive importance of the Sun, because Chinese Classics , themselves, refer to Japan (Nippon or Nihon) as the Land of the Source of the Sun.

The Sun also has a religious importance for Shinto practitioners in Japan. Since the Supreme Deity in Shinto is the Sun Goddess -- Omikami Amaterasu -- who is , according to folklore, is the progenitor of the first Emperor of Japan -- Jinmu. Jinmu claimed to have been the grandson of the Sun Goddess, and hence the Emperor of Japan is considered, according to ancient Shinto tradition, to be the physical form of the Sun, the scion of the Sun Goddess.

The Emperor is thus, according to old Shinto tradition, the Sun. So this religious context ties in line with historical political legitimacy derived from old Sui texts and from also the Nihon Shoki.

I see. So, it is a name given by Chinese. I was scratching my head since for Japanese, they see both sun rise and sunset on the sea. Thanks :)

Let's think about this briefly. You, a Vietnamese want Japan to be the leader of Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan and Philippines. That is interesting. Let's see, Japan as of now and foreseeable future is still an occupied territory, an American neo-colonial outpost. So what you suggesting is you want the slave to be the leader of the lesser slaves so you can all serve the USA. Keep dreaming, kid.

This is why no one respect the spineless Vietnamese lol.
First, the last thing I need is respect from a chinese clown.

Second, military alliance between nations exists since millenniums. Usually with the most powerful country as leader. For you probably it is a major surprise but not for other nations in the world.

Third, military alliance aims to counter a common enemy. Nothing to do with master slave relationship.

Last, if Japan can protect herself, a military presence of America may be no longer needed. Establishing a local alliance with nations I listed above, plus a nuclear component are a way to go.

You're welcome @nang2 . As you can see during the early , infant period of Japan's history, China played a great role and role model for the creation of our Imperial court system, the civil administration system, civil examination system, religious system, architecture, land reform, agrarian reform, organization of the military, and the concept of national unity. The development of a gentry class, through civil administration examination, is a hallmark of Chinese influence to Japan. Central to this was the works of Confucius , which shaped Japanese social landscape.

No Japanese will deny this precious Fraternal relationship of China to early Japan. It is even lamented upon and deeply romanticized in Japanese art, and even Anime. :)

@Viet my friend,

Perhaps i am too idealistic, but i cannot help but dream of a unified East Asia. Perchance to dream a day where Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Mongolia and Viet Nam (well we consider Viet Nam as East Asian, anyways) can form a regional cooperation bloc. Where borders will be removed, social and political harmony, and where peace, security and law and order is maintained. Don't you dream of it or think of this possibility , my friend? Sometimes i think it does no benefit to talk about the same things of individual nation states level. We should transcend this individual nation states level and think of a more collective regional level.

You misunderstood me, NO one respect spineless Vietnamese like you, Viet boy. Btw you sure China is the enemy? Maybe in your imagination, perhaps? And there you go again showing the typical spineless Vietnamese character "Usually with the most powerful country as leader" if you truly believe what you just said then you better accept China, your millennium old master, as leader since China will always be more powerful than your Vietnam.

About countering a common enemy, why don't you be more realistic here? Who created the false flag Tonkin incident in order to justify the invasion and massacre of hundreds of thousands of your Vietnamese? Who invaded and subjugated the Japanese? Who is the thorn preventing a unified Korea and a unified China (mainland + Taiwan)? The same answer applies to all. Spineless Vietnamese like you are blind to the obvious. To be fair, there are Chinese who are idiot like you, they are called Taiwanese, but of course not all Taiwanese are traitors just as I believe not all viets are spineless as you are.

Here is a more realistic alliance of future East Asia: China (+ Taiwan), Korea, Vietnam (pro-China), Mongolia, Japan (independent of US).
