Member of the Standing Committee of the BNP, M K Anwar, warned the "(BAL) Alliance" government that, "More than 100 people have been shot to death in the last few days. The public will not let the (BAL) government get away scot free if one more shot is fired." He added, "The rule of law and Shahbag (circus) can not continue simultaneously. The Islamic and Nationalist forces have to close ranks for the downfall of this autocratic government."

These words were spoken by him as the Chief Guest in a panel discussion held on the sixth anniversary of the imprisonment of BNP's senior vice-chairman Tareq Rahman.

The Nationalist generation of Liberation War organized this discussion at the Auditorium of the Engineers' Institution in the capital today. This discussion was held under the chairmanship of Sama Obaed, President of the Liberation War generation.

M K Anwar said, "The current autocratic government shot more than 100 people to death in the last few days. Then, they boasted in the parliament that they (the BAL government) can not be considered feeble."

M K Anwar then quipped, "Are we going to assume that you are going to kill more people, then?".

Cautioning the government, he said "The people will not let you go scot free if you fire one more shot. Prepare yourselves for enduring retaliation if you intend to assault (the people)."

"The Awami League proclaims itself to be the pro-Liberation party. Yet, they killed the fundamental spirit of the Liberation War by eliminating democracy after Independence. None of the 'spirits' of the Liberation War was kept intact by them. At that time, they chanted 'We do not want rule of law, we want rule of Mujib.'", stressed M K Anwar.

He further commented, "(The) Shahbag (circus) and rule of law can not continue (to exist) simultaneously. If the (BAL) government respects the rule of law, then it must provide equal opportunity to those that want to speak out against the Shahbag (circus)."

"The government has lodged many cases against Tareq Rahman, and has been conducting malicious propaganda against him. Yet they could not bring (?) a single allegation to the court (successfully?). Tareq Rahman will tear apart all the conspiracies weaved against him and return to the country to lead it. ", said M K Anwar.

Former Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Emaz Uddin Ahmed said that "The rule of law does not exist in the country at the moment, at all. The people of the country desire peace from the government. The government must not only understand the demands of its political wings but also understand the demands of the people.". Asserting that injustice has been carried out against Tareq Rahman, he hoped for the swift recovery of the BNP senior vice-chairman.

Professor Peayas Karim opined that "We believe in the spirit of the Liberation War, not in the spirit of (the) Shahbag (circus)." Alluding to the gathering at Shahbag, he quipped "The spirits of those who are standing on (a foundation built upon) lies are not the same as the spirits of the Liberation War."

"I expressed solidarity with this gathering at a Television talkshow after (the) Shahbag (circus) had started.", he confirmed. "Expressing my solidarity with this gathering, I also asked (the Shahbag circus?) not to forget the Hallmark scandal, Share market loot, the murder of Beswajeet (by BAL cadres), and other big ticket cases of graft. But soon after, I found out that those Shahbagi (clowns?) have boycotted me, according to reports in newspapers. Allegedly, I have spoken out against them, and apparently, I am a pro-Jamaat (apologetic?) personality (for speaking out on BAL misrule?)."

He claimed, "I have the courage to admit whatever I have done, or whatever I have said, but I am being threatened for things that I have not said. I am concerned about the safety of my family now. We never fought for such a Bangladesh."

"The country needs a patriotic government that is pro-democracy, pro-independence and pro-sovereignty, but not the Shahbagi 'Emran Sirkar'. The fight for the establishment of a pro-Bangladesh government must continue unabated.", he stressed.

(Senior?) Economist Mahbub Ullah asserted, "We do not believe in 'communalism.' The war crimes tribunal process has been controversial within the country. No party has accepted it."

"Tareq Rahman was tortured inhumanely under the guise of interrogation.", he suggested. "He was dropped from 50 feet above the ground (to ground level?). Nobody can accept this (behaviour)."

The Secretary General of the BFUJ, Shawkat Mahmood affirmed, "The (BAL) government is carrying out malicious publicity painting Tareq Rahman as a villain. But Tareq Rahman is the hero of the entire country, a statesman in fact. There is no rule of law in the country now. The fact that a politician like Tareq Rahman can not return to the country is strong evidence for the lack of rule of law in the country."

President of the National Press Club, Kamal Uddin Sabuj stated "The gathering at Shahbag has garnered no support from the youth of the country. It is a gathering of a specific political party."

Freedom fighter Ismail Hussein Bengal averred, "The grandson of a Raja kar, Imran, claims to be more powerful than the (BAL) government at his gathering in Shahbag." He expressed his indignation at PM Seikh Hasina for this act.

Bengal further added, "I have been saying from the beginning, that the Shahbagi (clowns) are agents of expansionist India. It has now been proven. The pro-Liberation War generation must take to the streets against these (agents)."

"Conspiracies were hatched against Tareq Rahman because he was advancing the cause of BNP at the grassroots level." said BNP leader Shahzada Miah.

The discussion was administered by BNP leader Manjur Hussein Isa. The president of "Chhatra Dal" (Student Party - student wing of BNP) Abdul Qader Bhooyan and other leaders were also present at the discussion.
