The Proud woman of Indian Air Force: Padmavathy Bandopadhyay
New Delhi: Women have always played an active role, though indirect in maintain the high morale of the Armed Forces by way of participating in various welfare and social activities of various branches of the Armed Forces.
But the time was not always good for the women in defence services, earlier they were discouraged to be a part of it.
Still there were women of dignity, who took step and prooved that women can also serve the nation at its best in defence services as well, Padmavathy Bandopadhyay is one of them.
Padmavathy Bandopadhyay is the first woman Air Marshal of the Indian Air Force. She joined the Indian Air Force in 1968
Bandopadhyay was born in 1944 at Tirupathi, Andhra Pradesh, grew up in New Delhi and obtained her education at the Kirori Mal College.(She is from My state Andhra Pradesh )
She has been first woman to become a Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Society of India and the first Indian woman to have conducted scientific research at the North Pole.
She is also the first woman officer to have completed the Defence Service Staff College course in 1978. She is an aviation medicine specialist and a member of the New York Academy of Sciences as well.
She was the Director General Medical Services (Air) at the Air Headquarters.
Padma Bandopadhyay was awarded the Visisht Seva Medal for her meritorious service during the 1971 Indo-Pak conflict. She married S. N. Bandopadhyay, a fellow air force officer.
She is also the first woman officer of the Indian Air Force to be promoted to the rank of Air Vice Marshal.
