The Mirage 2000 Upgrade: What Makes India's Fighter Jet Better

Let's assume f16 vs mirage 2000i,

We still need numbers ! 76 vs 48 ? (Even though genuine block 52 s are lesser)

There is a old painting for that as well. ... lol

F-16s are in greater number, yes.

Can anyone compare these two fighters in details pls. This dwell is old and epic. Its time to compare with MIrage's newest avatar. :D

Damn, RDY 2 is the better radar with longer range..
RDY 3 is the export version with capped capability

No its RdY-2 only its comes with mirage-2000 Mk2 The RDY-3 is not the export version of the RDY-2. The RC-400 is the export name of the RDY-3... they are the same radar. The RDY-3 is a lighter version of the RDY-2 that can be fitted in smaller aircraft. Capabilities are the same.As part of the MF2000 upgrade, 27 Mirage F1 of the Royal Moroccan Air Force are being fitted with the Thales RC400 (RDY-3 or RDC), a derivative of the RDY with an antenna sized to fit the smaller aircraft.

All those who are Saying its RDY-3 are Speculating on Misinformed Assessments on Amateur Media Reports RDY-2 is a Standard Radar for Mirage-2000-5 mk2 Upgrade For Further Information Please visit Official Dassault Page

Characteristics and performance of the system

The Mirage 2000-5 Mk2 is available in single and twin-seater versions. With the exception of the internal guns (ventral pod for the twin-seater), the twin-seater Mirage 2000-5 Mk2 keeps all the operational capabilities of the single-seater, including the Mach 2.2 capability.

The twin-seater, used for pilots’ conversion and advanced training, can thus very easily be integrated into a combat deployment, and be operated by one or two crewmembers.
Built around a modular and highly adaptive architecture, the Mirage 2000-5 Mk2 system is based on high performance internal sensors such as:

  • The RDY 2 radar manufactured by the Thales company is a latest-generation look-up / look-down long-range radar. Its ability to switch automatically in the detection, tracking and fire-control modes makes it unrivalled for air-to-air missions. Leading technical characteristics are as follows:
In air-defence mission, the RDY 2 multimode radar can simultaneously detect up to 24 targets at all altitudes.
It can track up to eight targets simultaneously and track four priority targets automatically in both the vertical and horizontal planes. It can evaluate the effects of beyond-visual-range attacks.
In air-to-surface mission, it is capable to identify accurately fixed or mobile targets, and to designate them to the weapons.
The RDY 2 radar satisfies the essential requirements of modern aerial combat, including firing against multiple targets. The radar employs three pulse repetition frequencies (PRF), with automatic monitoring frequencies for target detection purposes. The system is effective at all altitudes and ensures early detection, coupled with continuous target tracking of a very high standard.
The RDY 2 radar is designed to use capabilities in the areas of reconnaissance based on high-resolution images.
  • A laser gyro, GPS-coupled, inertial system featuring a high level of reliability, accuracy and a short alignment time (on ground alert, as well as in flight).
  • A fully integrated internal countermeasures systemcapable of detecting, identifying and localising the most dangerous air-to-air and ground-to-air threats with the highest accuracy; this system includes multiple jamming and decoying capabilities. Thanks to interferometric sensors, the localisation accuracy provides the option of designating ground-to-air targets to weapons during a SEAD mission.
  • A multifunction data link system.
To assist the pilot in the management of his mission, and to ease reconfigurations, the “Glass Cockpit” technology has been adapted for the Mirage 2000-5 Mk2.

The instrument panel includes 5 displays, among which 3 are color displays. The central screen is mainly dedicated to the tactical situation display. In between this screen and the Head-Up display, another screen -collimated to infinity – displays the main sensor image (radar or laser designation pod). This unique display layout allows the pilot to shift instantly from head-up flying to internal and external monitoring.

Among the other major evolutions of the Mirage 2000-5 Mk2, one can mention:

  • A modular avionics concept.
  • New larger lateral displays.
  • New back-seat colour display repeater.
  • Helmet-mounted sight.
  • Automatic terrain-following system based on a digital terrain file.
  • Digital map on a head-down display.
  • An aircraft-to-missile datalink with an increased number of channels.
  • A discrete multimode datalink system.
  • The new Damocles laser designation pod featuring:
    3-5µm infrared imagery,
    increased laser range.
  • A Flir imager integrated into the Damocles pylon.
  • On-board oxygen generation system.
  • Combined air-to-air and air-to-ground configurations.
  • New multi-channel recording system.
  • Increased maximum take off weight (17.5 t).
  • Very long range stand-off air-to-ground missiles.
  • The introduction of the IR Mica missile.
Thanks to its modular avionics and to the flexibility of its man-machine interface, the Mirage 2000-5 Mk2 offers its users the highest flexibility and evolution capability.

The pilot, now equipped with a display inside their helmet, is able to see superimposed radar data without having to reference any of the displays inside the cockpit. In operational terms, this means that in the case of air combat, the pilot, who is looking through their helmet, can direct weapons by merely pointing their head in the direction of what needs to be hit as opposed to having to manoeuvre the entire jet in the direction of the target - see target, lock on to target, launch weapons.
this the best technology ever with this, the plane on't need to be agile since the neck an the missile are far more agile than the plane itself.

I have question? is their any Russians helmit like that for the Indian S-30 or the Migs thanks.

They were inducted with Russian helmets but the Mig 29Ks and if I'm not wrong the upgraded 29s of IAF now will get the same helmet as the upgraded Mirage 2000 via Samtel. It's not clear if the same will happen to the Su 30 after the coming upgrade, but I wouldn't rule it out, since there is a high focus on adding as much Indian or western alternatives, to be less dependent on Russian spare supply or quality. The Su 30s produced in India already use indigenous mission computer and MFDs, with the upgrade ew avionics, as well as indigenous weapons will be added too.

So essentially before anyone fights there will be a general announcement made on all frequencies
" All F-16s and Mirages please head to the South for your fights, the rest must wait in their respective lines till it gets sorted out.. refreshments are available courtesy of GITS ,Lu Biscuits and Pepsi while you wait".
Sir, LOL. Your sense of humour is really soothing to the eyes n ears. I have great respect for you and neuclearpak in moderators category. On a serious note if we go by air to air mission wise F16 block 52 wins with slight margin in subsonic at ground level. While I have heard from my sir that Mirage have better ground attack capability bit in reality GOD knows. He said even the Jaguars wil have much better sensors now after recent ongoing upgrades. How do you see things from neutral perspective(I know some find others to be non neutral especially if one is sworn enemy like us, LOL). Thank you.

Depends, both the M2K and F-16 have slightly different strengths. The Mirages makes the initial turn faster but cant keep the turn for long.. whilst the F-16s makes the initial turn slower but can constantly keep it as long as it has fuel.. something that the M2K cannot do. Avionics wise the M2k-I is probably going to have a slight edge in some cases apart from a few really neat ground modes on the radar that the Americans put into the Block-52.
The Mirage is more stable as a ground platform than the Block-52(As in its a great level bomber that can get more accuracy out of unguided Iron bombs than a F-16 due to its planform) but in today's day and age of LGBs and accurate guidance that is becoming less and less relevant.
However, as much as clear that neither is there to counter anything. Each has a specific purpose within the force its part of and on and off they may or may not tangle.

The latest DARIN upgrade is really impressive as it brings what was essentially a tactical CAS aircraft into a really potent strike platform.

I fully agreed with your viewpoint sir. Mirage being a potent jet doesn't mean It can outclass vipor in every segment.

The Delta platform is its shortcoming. Aerodynamics are the limitation for the M2K.

As Egypt is looking to buy the UAE and Qatari Mirage-2000s and may be upgrading the 18 old ones to 2009 standards. IAF may plan to procure 150 FAF Mirage-2000s. Though there are M-2000s in South America which Egypt should look to procure for engine and Airframe spares.

No need ...both platform have different role to play ...its rare they face each other.M2K is for ground attack role which will be assisted by SU-30MKI.So, there are more chances of SU-30 and F-16 face off than M2K and F-16.
