The Story of Ulubatli Hasan

ulu.jpg

On the 28th of May 1453 Mehmet Han stood outside the walls of Constantinople with his army of 100,000 men. Among these men stood Ulubatli Hasan. On the 28th of May Mehmet Han gave an inspirational speech to his men and also prayed together with them for a victory. On the night of May 28th while the massive Siege Canons were firing the Sultan was praying to God for a victory in his tent but after each prayer he heard a voice say Ameen. The voice sounded familiar so he went outside to investigate. It turns out that it was Ulubatli Hasan. Mehmet Han recognized him because he was a veteran from the time of his father Murad II Han. Ulubatli Hasan got up and said " I was praying for a victory tomorrow". Ulubatli Hasan also asked if he could be in the first wave of attack in the very front of the line. Mehmet Han agreed to his request.

On May 29th the Canon fire seized and after the morning prayers the Military Band played the attack march and the soldiers assaulted the walls. Ulubatli Hasan began climbing the walls of Constantinople under a shower of stones, arrows, spears, and bullets followed by his 32 friends. When he reached the top of the wall he placed the Ottoman flag and defended it with the sword in his right hand. He held on to the flag vigilantly until he became martyred and collapsed after having 27 arrows lodged in his body. The Ottoman troops were inspired by the flag and continued the attack until finally the city was conquered that day.
