Islamabad, May 12 (IANS) The Lahore high court Thursday restrained Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari from taking part in political activities, Geo News reported.

In its 33-page verdict, the court said the president was not supposed to perform political activities and was bound to be impartial.

Several petitions challenging holding of dual office by Zardari were being heard by different benches of the court since 2009.

On March 10, counsel A.K. Dogar said Zardari was holding the office of Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairperson along with the office of president of Pakistan, making the President House a hub of political activities.

He said Zardari's act of holding political office was in clear violation of the constitution, and prayed that the president be directed to surrender the office of the Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairperson.

Initially, a government legal panel had contested the petitions. However, they boycotted the proceedings later, expressing their dissatisfaction after the court refused to hear their objection petition first.

The bench headed by Chief Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry later started ex-parte (one sided) proceedings on the petitions.

Did Zardari not already announce the Bilawal will take a greater political responsibility in September?

No legislation prevents the president from holding the office of the president and that of the party head and the issue is moral, rather than constitutional and this is the reason why a full bench of Lahore High Court had not directed President Asif Ali Zardari to leave the office and only opined that the president may not participate in political activities. President Zardari is not the only president who owns the party office, Rafique Tarrar and Ghulam Ishaq Khan were also very active in their political parties and none of them had reassigned from his political party. Leaving a part the past follies, for a moment we should analyze the current upheaval and fragile political situation of Pakistan, no one can think that decision of LHC is wise and sagacious. Pakistan is at cross roads in true sense and courts are busy in setting personal scores. LHC was always controversial and the recent verdict fortified the impression that Judiciary is not impartial. Though PPP is the first party, did not intervene in judicial matters and never tried to contain this institution, It is facing the anguish of Judiciary. Infact, Judiciary is being patronized by godfather of Punjab Province. The same godfather who stormed the Supreme Court and refused to accept several decisions by same courts, the same godfather who set the Kangaroo courts to push PPP against wall.
