The Fallen of World War II

.
WW2 in numbers. Interesting visualization of civilian and military death statistics to make sense of enormity of WW2 deaths. Also points to the fact that we are living at the most peaceful time, ever in human history.

sincerely, you have wasted your time and download limit on this vid. :) i describe how below and i must say i don't trust anyone who prefers to use mathematical graphs in place of plain words and numbers... the real world is not a mba college.

firstly, it is incorrect to use number of deaths and say that we now are living in the most peaceful time... millions will disagree with you, facts will disagree with you, the current every day news will disagree with you... does this picture[1] from the libya war in 2011 suggest "a most peaceful time"?? :) the acts was done by nato's ntc "rebels"... more of their "peace work" here[2]... and in some of these "peace works", western special forces participated, notably usa and belgium... i wonder what the former usa army soldier member here, jhungary, would say about this... and after world war 2 until 2009, 65 notable wars were fought and this was made known to the uno general assembly in september 2009 through the 1.38 hour speech of muammar gaddafi[3].

secondly, there is clear bias in the vid against the anti-capitalist movements and bloc... it begins in the description about world war 2 when among the german civilian deaths at the hands of the nazis the narrator mentions deaths of homosexuals ( gays presumably ) but no mention is made of the killing of german communists... this then continues into mention of stalin supposedly not allowing civilians to evacuate from cities and then the mention of stalin killing ussr citizens in gulags... and then no mention is made of the korea war where four million north koreans civilians and soldiers died... in indonesia between 1965 and 1966, reactionary elements in the army aligned with the western capitalist-imperialist bloc ( as ever ) massacred between 500,000 and one million communists and suspected supporters and sympathizers[4]... some say more... before the massacre, by 1965, the indonesian communist party ( pki ) had become the largest communist movement in the world... it is a shameful shameful act that today's indonesians have either forgotten/ignore this massacre or are not allowed by the mullah-loving capitalism-loving nato-aligned government[5] to speak of this absurd massacre.

thirdly, just because the european/western countries ( like usa, britain, germany and france ) are not fighting against each other, how is it even sensible to use that and say all is happy with the world?? what about european and western countries constantly invading countries and genociding?? do the people in grenada, iraq, laos etc not matter??

fourthly, it is absurd to hear the vid's narrator saying that there has been no old-style colonialism after 1945 much less any atrocities... the algerian war of independence of 1954 to 1962 against the post-ww2 continuation of the french colonial government saw the deaths of between 350,000 to 1.5 million algerians[6], though historians aligned with the france establishment quote less... and then there is the neo-colonialism of the usa-government-led post-ww2 nato capitalist-imperialist bloc whose invasions and regime-change plots have led to countless deaths, massacres and genocides that continue to this day.

After watching some heart wrenching pictures of WWII, I am glad that most of the world now lives in relative peace.
The number of deaths were definitely shocking but what upset me was the average age of those who died in millions- most of them were in their early 20s. Unfortunate!
@jamahir is right that the present time can also not be called "peaceful". Disturbing images from Syria/Iraq and Afghanistan are enough to shatter that notion.
But the video did say that rich countries have consciously avoided battles with other rich countries post WWII- one reason why US and Russia will never go on war against each other...or so I feel.

@hinduguy i wish you had tagged a few more members, specially those who are seen war mongering on this forum.

@Zarvan - Zarvi bhai do watch this video.

i had forgotten to include that part in my post... i will disagree and say that quite a few times usa and ussr have come close to nuclear war and also with the russian larger military involvement in syria ( late but welcome ), it has been the usa government that has pulled back.

indeed.

and i don't understand why some people have aggressive or violent theme as their profile-picture or user-name.

and people should read my signature.

and speaking of signatures, nice one you have presently. :D

@jamahir .. sorry for wasting your bandwidth(I got unlimited-ish).
The issue with comparing 'peaceful time' or anything in the world for that matter is, as long as we cannot use certain parameter to quantify it, we will find it hard to make any headway in our understanding let alone comparison. It will remain some warm and fuzzy thing in heart.

Imagine me comparing size of my land to your before we could quantify it, you will take offense in it saying how dare I make such comparison, your land has emotional attachment to you, besides it grows different crops. I just want comparison in one parameter: size.

Unless you can measure certain things, it will always be based on feelings and emotions, nothing wrong in that except it will vary from people to people. If you ask any south american tribal, spanish conquest was so much worse than WW2. WW2 was very peaceful time for them.

However we are just using one parameter at global level to figure out human condition(overall, not specific place)has got better or worse over time. Just like HDI uses certain key parameters to compare desirability of living in various places.

This does not deny that world is still pretty violent place. However watching 24/7 news makes us think world has got progressively worse. Human mind plays such games, the closer we are to certain thing, the more important it is. Remember how when we were teen, a small thing could bother us for ages. Later years we laugh at our stupidity.
There is another common theme that 'older times were better'.. (when I was growing up xyz never happened, kids these days..).

I understand if you are syrian or pakistani or afgan all this is bs. But many of us are fortunate enough to sit back and take a longer term view, use statistics to compare how we were earlier.

What matters is that both the countries avoided a full fledged war.
