Unless you take in a cumulative effect if others reduce their planned numbers of course.

The value of this is more in long-term considerations over modern programs as it points
to an old prediction that eventually, we'll build such Uber-tech weapons so pricey that …

"…we will probably be able to build and buy only one plane but cannot afford to fly it."

The question is how far in the future will that come to be true!

There is no saying. The answers change every 4-8 years when a new administration is elected. Should the next administration be even more liberal, yes, perhaps, this may be a possibility.

Honestly speaking though, there is no telling, it really depends on who's elected.

Example. SLS (Space Launch System) or Senate Launch System coined by opposition, may be cancelled by the next administration who may have differing views, or by one which decides to go all in for commercial launch capabilities.

Same thing with the F-35. The US government is known to waffle a lot.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott's proposal to put F-35 fighter jets on the Navy's two 27,000-tonne troop transport assault ships has been quietly dropped ahead of the government's defence white paper after it was found the ships would require extensive reworking and the project was too costly.

Mr Abbott asked defence planners in May last year to examine the possibility of putting up to 12 of the short-take-off and vertical-landing F-35 Bs on to the two ships – the largest in the Navy – which carry helicopters and are likely to be primarily used to transport troops and equipment to war or disaster zones.

But defence officials conceded to a Senate estimates committee late last year that the jump-jet proposal would involve extensive modifications to the ships

Defence sources have told The Australian Financial Review that the proposal was "still in the white paper mix" up until some weeks ago.

But one source close to the white paper was emphatic on Tuesday that "it will now not make the cut".

The white paper, which lays down the Abbott government's 20-year vision for defence – including a $275 billion-plus weapons wishlist – is expected to be released next month.

Mr Abbott announced in April last year that Australia would buy an additional 58 conventional take-off and landing versions for the Royal Australian Air Force at a cost of $12 .4 billion, bringing the number of orders to 72.

So, essentially, because they - the Australian DoD, specifically the navy - didn't invest in certain facilities when they had their Spanish designed BPEs built, they would face significant extra cost making them ready for F-35B after the fact. A case of 'Pennywise, pound foolish' in defence policy? Perhaps, but in no way a reflection on the F-35B itself, clearly.

The ship's roles are to:

• embark, transport and deploy an embarked force (Army in the case of the ADF but could equally be an allied Army or Marines), along with their equipment and aviation units, and
• carry out/support humanitarian missions.

The LHD's flight deck is 202.3m long and 32m wide (4750m2), allowing the ship to operate a range of ADF rotary wing aircraft including:

• MRH90 helicopter
• CH-47 Chinook helicopter
• Blackhawk helicopter
• S-70B-2 Seahawk
• Armed Reconnaisance Helicopter
• Romeo Seahawk

The flight deck has been configured with six spots on the port side for medium sized aircraft such as the NRH 90 or Blackhawk, which allows for simultaneous take off and landing operations; alternatively it can support simultaneous take off and landing operations of four CH-47 Chinooks.

There are two aircraft elevators – one aft of the flight deck and one fwd of the island on the stbd side - that can accommodate medium sized helicopters, with the after one able to accommodate larger helicopters such as CH 47. Both aircraft elevators service the hangar and light vehicle/cargo deck and the fwd elevator is dual roled for stores and personnel.

So posting a Gripen's fan blog article, even from a reasonably accurate and up-to-date one, is not a problem
really. I'm more bothered by the fact that the piece does not concern the F-35 at all, save as an a priori cause.
