And remember, the performance of the Harrier never was comparable to a top of the line contemporary fighter, yet is was a very usefull asset, with unique capabilities.

The US Department of Defense (DOD) accepted its 45th F-35 Lightning II aircraft delivery for 2015, meeting the program production goal for the year. With this delivery, Lockheed Martin has delivered 154 operational aircraft to the DOD and partner nations since program inception.

“Meeting aircraft production goals is a critical stepping stone in demonstrating the program is ready for the expected significant production ramp up,” F-35 Program Executive Officer Lieutenant General Chris Bogdan said.

“It took thousands of people around the world to achieve this milestone and they should all be proud of what they accomplished.”

The 45 F-35 deliveries include:

  • 26 F-35A - US Air Force
  • 2 F-35A - Royal Norwegian Air Force (first two)
  • 1 F-35A - Aeronautica Militare (first Italian Air Force)
  • 8 F-35B - US Marine Corps
  • 8 F-35C - US Navy/US Marine Corps
The 45 F-35 Lightning II aircraft are assigned to the following installations:

  • 17 - Luke Air Force Base, Glendale, Arizona – including all international jets
  • 8 - Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, South Carolina
  • 8 - Eglin Air Force Base, Valparaiso, Florida
  • 5 - Hill Air Force Base, Ogden, Utah
  • 7 - Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nevada
Of the 45 aircraft delivered, 44 were from the Fort Worth facility in Texas and one was from the Cameri facility in Italy. The 2015 total represents a 25 per cent increase in production on the previous year.

“Delivering the most F-35s in program history is a clear demonstration of our growing maturity and stability,” Lockheed Martin F-35 Program General Manager Lorraine Martin said.

“Congratulations to the entire government and industry team for their work to deliver 45 aircraft.”

The F-35 Lightning II, a 5th generation fighter, combines advanced low observable stealth technology with fighter speed and agility, fully fused sensor information, network-enabled operations and advanced sustainment. Three distinct variants of the F-35 will replace the A-10 and F-16 for the US Air Force, the F/A-18 for the US Navy, the F/A-18 and AV-8B Harrier for the US Marine Corps, and a variety of fighters for at least 10 other countries.

Ph, so now you are attempting to suggest the Harrier was a failure? Laughable, particularly since there are crashes for ANY in service aircraft type. The by itself above prooves ... nothing.

During its service with the USMC, the Harrier [single engine AV-8B, that is] has had an accident rate three times that of the Corps' [twin engine] F/A-18s. As of July 2013, approximately 110 aircraft have been damaged beyond repair since the type entered service in 1985,[161] the first accident occurring in March that year.[162] The AV-8 was dubbed a "widow maker" by some in the military.[99][163] The Los Angeles Times reported in 2003 that the Harrier family had the highest rate of major accidents among military aircraft in service at that time, with 148 accidents and 45 people killed.[164] However, Lon Nordeen notes that several other USMC single-engine strike aircraft, like the A-4 Skyhawk and A-7 Corsair II, had worse accident rates.[165]

Accidents have in particular been connected to the proportionate amount of time the aircraft spends taking off and landing, which are the most critical phases in flight.[99][166] Further analysis shows that US Marine senior officers never understood the uniqueness of the aircraft, that the Harrier design was more complex, like that of helicopters. Cutbacks in senior maintenance personnel and pilot mistakes had a disastrous effect on the safety of the American-operated AV-8B, which gained it a negative reputation in the US press that was not deserved

India to should immediately get onto the F-35 program before it gets shut to avoid the repeat of C-17 procurement :D

On a serious note, Can India transfer the contracts of Canada, Denmark and other countries that are backing out and get into the line/queue ahead of the others?

Canada hasn't exactly backed out, They are holding a competition that the F-35 will be in while still paying in to the F-35 program. Sounds like the conclusion is foregone to me, especially considering the utter about face we see in action and silence in words from pre-election rhetoric.

Just remember They haven't even stopped paying into the program.

They will probably buy F-35's on less generous term than were otherwise possible within the decade after a pr competition to make good on bad promises..

As for India... not sure if the US would be comfortable selling the F-35 to unaligned countries. I'm under the assumption that India is looking to Russia, but given that its 5th gen program is getting slashed, I can see why they would want to look elsewhere.

India and US have been negotiating the DTTI and upon it's completion, India is planning to acquire F-35Cs for it's new aircraft carrier. The question mark is around the F-35As as India already has a JV with Russia which is apparently running into trouble (may also be related to shift of interest from PAK-FA/FGFA to F-35A). In the past LM has pitched F-16 block 60s for India's MMRCA with a path for aquisition of F-35A at a later stage but the timeline for F-35A has always been the contentious issue.

India needs F-35A yesterday.:usflag:
 
When 99% of world countries can't even make a JF17 thunder , why waste billions in planes like F35 and vertical landing

The mere F15 is enough with enhancements for 200 years
