Thanos proved too much for the Avengers in the latest movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe but he met his match with Toronto police.

The main villain in Avengers: Infinity Wars was “arrested” Friday afternoon following a run-in with an officer near Dundas Square.

Behind the mask was 42-year-old Frank Coraci. Armed with Thanos’s body armour, several Infinity Stones and a handler to avoid bumping into pedestrians, Coraci took to Yonge St. to bring a bit of laughter to Toronto following the van rampage on April 23.

“I couldn’t walk two steps without someone asking for a selfie,” Coraci said.

Among the selfie-seekers was Sgt. Noel DeGuzman, who stopped Coraci as he made his way down Yonge. While Coraci initially worried that he was about to get in trouble, it turned out that the constable was a fan and requested a photo for his daughter.

Coraci said the scene was largely the DeGuzman’s idea.

“What started as good-hearted banter between two Marvel fans and subsequently a photo for my daughter, apparently exploded onto social media,” DeGuzman wrote in an email to the Star. “I am thankful that it put a smile on many people’s faces.”

The sergeant noted that he was pleased that he was able to do “what the Avengers couldn’t do,” quoting a tweet that circulated with the photo.

DeGuzman said the photo put a smile on his daughter’s face.

With Infinity Wars becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, fans quickly circulated Thanos’s defeat at the hands of Toronto police on social media.

“Straight out of the comics!” wrote one Reddit user, who pointed out that Thanos has indeed been arrested before, rather than taken down by the Avengers.

Another Reddit user posted, tongue in cheek:

Thanos: I have an infinity gauntlet.

Const. Lam: I don’t care.

While Internet users speculated that the costume was put together for the Toronto Comic Arts Festival this past weekend, Coraci said his costume was unrelated.
