Tesla China might repeat its outstanding Model 3 sales last month this December, partly thanks to Shanghai’s updated license plate rules. A graph from the Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) Cui Dongshu revealed that 6,846 Model 3 units were sold in Shanghai last month.

Shanghai’s November Model 3 sales made up 31% of the total amount of China-made cars Tesla sold last month in the country. Tesla Model 3 sales increased in November, with the CPCA reporting a total of 21,604 Model 3 units, a 78% increase compared to October’s sales. Shanghai’s surge in Tesla Model 3 sales, which tripled between October and November, could be related to the city’s updated license plate rules.

In October, Shanghai drivers’ interest in new energy vehicles (NEVs) spiked after the city announced that it would expand restrictions on non-local license plates. One local Tesla store in China reported selling 80 vehicles in a single morning after the news broke about the policy. Global Times reported that the same Tesla store usually sold between 10-20 vehicles in a single day.

According to the policy updates Shanghai authorities released in October, cars with non-local license plates would not be allowed to drive through certain elevated roads in the city from 7am to 8pm on workdays starting from November 2. Since the policy took effect last month, the spike in sales could continue on to December, leading to a Q4 surge for Tesla China.

Shanghai limits the number of license plates issued to car owners every year, like many other major cities in China. Non-local license plates are a good secondary option for car owners unable to get Shanghai license plates. NEVs are not subject to Shanghai’s license plate restrictions and have become a good option for car owners, even more so now that the city’s non-local license plate policies are in effect.

The drastic spike in NEV sales after the policy took effect hints a rise in demand for clean energy vehicles. Tesla as the rising king of EVs has a large advantage in the NEV market. As @ray4tesla stated Tesla has become the brand of choice in China, partly because of its “cool factor.”

Here's China's 2019 top EV sellers to compare to this year.

Will the Tesla Model 3 jump to the top in 2020 and even surpass BAIC EU's 111,047 units to become China's highest ever yearly EV sales model?

Tesla EV sales will not repeat of November for December. BYD are catching up fast with 10000 BYD Hans deliver in November.

I have underestimated the popular of BYD Han in China and BYD mega production capacity. Chinese car owners are quite tradition. Looks like they are going more for comfort, quality and safety.

The extra safety of blade battery and faster charge are something Tesla 3 is never going to match.

Safety is one major features that cause the surge of BYD Han sales.

It won't matter. On January 1st, 2021 there is an excellent chance that the Tesla Model 3 will be crowned the top selling EV in China for the year 2020 after climbing up from the 8th spot in 2019. It will be there for the recordbooks. Only the little Wuling Mini threatens to usurp it.

2021 brings the Tesla Model Y and self-driving.

Of cos, it matter. Becos it's a sight Chinese EV are surpassing Tesla.
Tesla 3 high selling got to so with it's much early release for 2020 at expense of quality but due to delay of top Chinese EV like Han ,Xpeng P7. Most Chinese buyers has no choice.

BYD Han lower sales per unit got to do with ramping up production to meet it's demand rather than becos it's outsold by Tesla. As I say, tesla 3 release much earlier than them. Their production have mostly iron out standard and able to meet demand.

2020 will be a one time off for Tesla to capture Chinese market. :enjoy:

What do you think of Li One SUV - its quiet a good looking SUV for sub 50k. Even conventional engine SUV's will be bargain at that price with those features. And it looks it also uses a gas engine as range extender for the battery.

It need to have some cutting edge tech to make a different. For example. people buy Nio becos they want swappable batt which they do not wish to waste time charging.

Tesla 3 is well known for its sporty steering and long range.

Xpeng P7 is longer range than Tesla 3, sleek design, stable handing, great voice command(real smart EV) and plenty of solid hardware to make a different.

BYD Han with its ultra safe blade battery , 3.9s pick up (0-100km)with decent range and cozy interior.

December is one of the biggest months for car sales, Tesla can repeat it. European cars haven't yet started delivering their NEV cars to the Chinese market in big volume. 2021 should also be a big year for Tesla in the Chinese market. Tesla is going to start falling or keep stable in 2022.

Imagine within 7-8 years nobody needs OIL, :cheesy: sand niggers stay with their camels in hot deserts.

The Chinese consumers are spoil with choices. The only problem with domestic Chinese EV makers are production and not lack of demand. Seems like only BYD production can meet more than 10000 sales per month. Xpeng is still a small companies while Nio SUV EV are not that hot compare to sedan.

Chinese EV makers nowadays are too obsessed with quality that delay the right moment. If BYD Han can launch full sales 2-3 months earlier. Things might be different now. Looks at Tesla 3, they dont care about quality but hit the market as soon as possible as there are no major competitors. They know if launch too late. Strong EV maker like Xpeng and Han will march in front of them.
