Terror threat to Jaipur ODI, security beefed up

Police have confirmed a terror threat to the first one-day international cricket match between India and South Africa in Jaipur scheduled this Sunday.

B.L. Soni, inspector general of Rajasthan police, said his force had intelligence inputs of the threat.

"We have terror inputs of the threat and beefed up security at Sawai Mansingh Stadium (the match venue)," he said.

Intelligence agencies had earlier warned about terror strikes during various sporting events to be held in the country this year including the Hockey World Cup and the Commonwealth Games.

However, Home Minister P Chidambaram has assured all the visiting countries of foolproof security for the upcoming sporting events

So how much worrying these threats are ?

Earlier HuJI issued such threats to foreign players taking part upcoming Common Wealth games in India and Hockey World Cup in current month.

And now this confirmation by Indian police also confirmed there threats to players in ongoing cricket game

So how much worrying these threats are ?

I guess only the person who is quoted in that newspiece can tell you that. Personally I think its a good measure to beef up security; indicates they aren't taking these threats too lightly.

yes indeed beefing up security is the right step in the face of such threats.

After Pune blast, the risk is adding to concerns.

How much HuJI is capable of carrying out any attack?

Shiv Sena blames Pakistan for Pune terror blast

MUMBAI: A Pakistani organisation called Al Alami has claimed responsibility for the February 13 Pune blast, the Shiv Sena said on Thursday in its party mouthpiece Saamna.

In its editorial, the party expressed concern over the spectre of Islamic terrorism again raising its head and wondered whether the country was prepared to combat it.

"Whoever is responsible, it is clear that they have Pakistan's backing. Terror organisations are a part of the Pakistani military set-up, they are trained in Pakistani army camps with the aim to annihilate Hindus in India and form a Muslim government here," the editorial said.

Simultaneously, it pointed out that HuJI, an associate of al-Qaeia, has now issued a new threat warning foreign players that if they participate in IPL 3, Commonwealth Games and Cricket World Cup, the terrorists will create bloodshed.

"But who will stop HuJI? The Pune blast has proved that nobody can stop them," it said.

The editorial said that although the intelligence agencies had knowledge and even US agencies had warned of the possibility of such an attack in Pune, the Maharashtra police were busy giving protection to "Prince" Rahul Gandhi and Shah Rukh Khan's new movie.

"We were aware that Headley had visited the vicinity of the German Bakery but could do nothing to prevent the blast - making HuJI even more arrogant," it added.

"Instead, Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan is only interested in providing security for IPL 3 which is the playground for a few rich people to make money."

Lambasting Chavan, the editorial said: "He has even exempted it (the IPL 3 cricket tournament) from entertainment tax, as if these rich people were social workers. The Rs10-15 crore could have been used to provide food for poor, water, homes, electricity or prevent farmland suicides. But neither the chief minister nor his godmother in New Delhi (implying Sonia Gandhi) are bothered about these issues."

In the meantime, the terrorists came under the very nose of the government, carried out the Pune terror blast and managed to escape to safety, said Saamna.

"There are sympathisers of Pakistan in every nook and corner of the state, they are also influencing Bollywood, big business and politics. These are the people strengthening Pakistan. If terrorism has to be wiped out, the country must be cleaned of these 'Pakistanis' first," the editorial concluded.

No idea there Jana. I am not an expert on intelligence and I doubt if anybody on this forum really is. As a layman, all I know is that the name is often quoted in newspapers and if memory serves me right an operative of HuJi was caught in Hyderabad (India) sometime back.

I'd say, don't go by what the Shiv Sena says in the Samna. Nobody outside of Mumbai pays any attention to their rants.

ShivSena's statement should not be treated as GoI comment.
SS is looking for anything which would enable them to be in news. This is the latest one.

Yes you are right.

His statement can not be taken as statement by Indian govt. I know he keeps on ranting.

HuJI is often termed as main preparator of many attacks in India.

So this time i dont know if the threats should be taken as seriouse or not.

Terror threats make Warne 'think twice' about playing in IPL3

SYDNEY: Shane Warne says threats of a terrorist attack have him "thinking twice" about playing in this year's Indian Premier League, reports said on Thursday.

Fresh security worries have surfaced ahead of the field hockey World Cup later this month in New Delhi, the glitzy Twenty20 cricket tournament in March-April and October's Commonwealth Games.

This week the Hong Kong-based Asia Times Online news website said it had received a warning from Al-Qaeda-linked militant Ilyas Kashmiri about attacking sports events in India.

The developments have prompted the Australian legspin great to urge the organisers of the IPL to consider moving the tournament if threats of a terrorist attack are proven to be credible.

Warne is set to leave later this month to captain-coach the Rajasthan Royals.

"The threats of the past 24 hours have certainly got me thinking twice and is of deep concern to athletes across a number of sports," Warne told the Daily Telegraph.

"If the threats are proven to be real, then organisers of the IPL may look at moving the tournament.

"We moved it last year at short notice and it can be done and there is no way organisers will risk the safety of players and officials."

South Africa remains the most viable option as they hosted the IPL last year due to safety concerns in India relating to the country's general election.

"I love the country and I'm committed to the Royals but obviously if I'm given the advice (that) it's unsafe that will prompt a serious rethink," Warne said.

One source of security concern was eased this week when the leader of a right-wing Hindu group withdrew a threat to prevent Australians from playing in the IPL because of attacks on Indians living Down Under.

The group said it had dropped its opposition as "Indian brothers living in Australia asked us to lift the ban as it would aggravate their problems".

The ultra-nationalist party last month vowed to stop "kangaroo cricketers" from participating in the IPL in Mumbai and Maharashtra state until the attacks stopped.

India also vowed Wednesday to "protect every player" in upcoming major sports events in the country after a weekend bombing and alleged new threats.

"We will provide full protection to every player, every coach, every official who participates in the forthcoming (field) hockey, cricket and Commonwealth Games," Home Minister P Chidambaram said.
