(Bloomberg) -- The Trump administration’s move to ban U.S. residents from doing business with Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s WeChat app rippled through Chinese markets, erasing $34.6 billion from the Internet giant’s market value and sending the yuan to its biggest slump in two weeks.

The U.S. president’s executive order added to investor concern that the deteriorating U.S.-China relationship will weigh on companies, economies and markets. Initial confusion over the ban’s scope led to volatile trading on Friday, with Tencent plunging more than 10% during the morning session in Hong Kong. The stock pared losses to close down 5% after a U.S. official clarified the ban will only cover WeChat.

The vaguely worded order had triggered fears it would apply not only to Tencent’s messaging and payments services in the U.S. but also to business relationships with some of America’s largest corporations. Tencent, ranked by Newzoo as the world’s biggest games publisher by revenue in 2019, collaborates with U.S. industry leaders like Activision Blizzard Inc. and Electronics Arts Inc. It also holds a large stake in Fortnite maker Epic Games Inc. and owns League of Legends developer Riot Games Inc.

Before Friday’s drop Tencent was worth $686 billion, making it the world’s eighth-largest company by market capitalization and bigger than Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Its huge size means it occupies a dominant position on global indexes. The firm accounts for more than 6% of MSCI Inc.’s developing nation gauge and 4% of its Asian Pacific measure.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index slumped 1.6% on Friday, while the offshore yuan weakened as much as 0.45%.

Trump’s order on WeChat came after a similar injunction against ByteDance Ltd.’s TikTok, the viral video service the White House accuses of jeopardizing national security. Tencent, whose app sits at the heart of communications between people and businesses within China and abroad, is likely to face continued pressure from American policy makers, said Steven Leung, executive director at UOB Kay Hian (Hong Kong) Ltd.

“The U.S. government is expected to follow up with more measures targeting Tencent,” Leung said. “Tencent’s overseas expansion map now looks a bit uncertain, since some M&A deals, especially if its targets are based in the U.S., will face challenges.”

Is this some kind of payback for China banning WhatsApp, Facebook, Skype, Instagram, Twitter,Snapchat, and other stuff?
No, US just want CN collapse when reaching 10,000 usd/year GDP per capital , the worst time of middle income trap .

Lybia collapse when reaching 10,000 usd/year GDP per capital, too.

This is perfect buying opportunities for certain Chinese stocks.
Chinese should change models and develop more consumption based economy along with strong exports.

I fully support Trump's vision of a completely de-coupled China-US economy and tech ecosystems.

US dollar hegemony is collapsing as the US dollar turns into toilet paper. A fully decoupled economy and tech ecosystems insulates China.

The Harmony OS is coming in September. I guess I will have to replace my 11 with a Huawei.

Yes. US is just reciprocating what China does to US companies in China. It's a simple tit-for-tat.

Except their whole "free world" narrative completely fails, it makes them look just as bad as China who they routinely criticise.

How? This is not a unilateral decision by US but a response to China's own decision to ban US apps. Free and fair trade is a two-way street. How can China freely operate its apps in US while banning US apps in China?

Besides, I don't see much support for China's position on this issue.

It's a decent hit, and we will see more sustained hits on China for purposefully spreading the virus globally, and lately, for its expansionism. Just the tip of the iceberg so far.

US apps don't want to follow Chinese's law of the land while Chinese apps follow US law of the land.

Also, US apps want Chinese Government help to let them dominate the Chinese market while Chinese apps don't ask for such favours from the US Government.

CN law force US apps to send all information to CN Govt, its against human rights and international law.Only CN apps can accept that.

So you think all the us apps keeps the data in local countries where they operate and us gov doesn’t have access to that data ?
You r living in fools paradise mate

I am in favour or it
Even pakistan need to do this , our people using these apps and these companies doesn’t pay any local tax and build data rom it , our gov have no control or right to see trend analysis etc

mind it , it was controlled data and social media which hyped and destroyed half of Middle East

No. These companies refused to obey China's laws and were automatically banned here.

If Apple phones ban Wechat, it will completely lose China market. Which is 20% of its global sale.

VN also using US apps and our economy still growing well.

So, dont blame the US apps, Middle east countries have failed Govt who failed to create enough good jobs for their people while the leaders r too rich ( Lybia,Egypt leader had more than 100 billion USD).

Of course ppl cant survive when they have Nothing to eat while their leaders r super rich
