The idea of establishing Teknopark İstanbul came into existence by Defence Industry Executive Committee (SSİK) decisions dated 8 October 1987 and 3 May 1999, numbered 87/6 and 99/10 respectively.
Teknopark İstanbul, established within the scope of Advance Technology Industrial Park & Airport Project (ITEP) carried out by SSM, is located on the Asian Side, Pendik Kurtköy, next to Sabiha Gökçen International Airport. Sprawling on approximately 250 hectares of land, Teknopark İstanbul gained the “İstanbul Technology Development Zone” status on 3 October 2009 in accordance with the Technology Development Zone Law numbered 4691.
After the signing of the partnership contract on 12 March 2010 for the set-up of an administrative company among the partners, namely Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM), İstanbul Chamber of Commerce (İTO), İstanbul Commerce University (İTİCÜ), Airport Management and Aeronautical Industries Inc. (HEAŞ and Defence Technologies and Engineering Inc. (STM), Teknopark İstanbul Inc. was founded on 4 May 2010.
Teknopark İstanbul will focus on the following selected target industries in Turkey’s pursuit to be one of the leading countries in advanced technologies:
1. Aviation and Aerospace
2. Defence Industries
3. Marine Technologies
4. Advanced Electronics
5. Industrial Software
6. Advanced Materials
Estimated to reach 2 Billion US$ in total investment, Teknopark İstanbul aims to house circa 1.000 firms and more than 30.000 skilled research and development staff, with a closed area of approximately 650.000 square meters and generate 5-7 Billion US$ turnover per year in advanced technologies at the end of a 15 year development period.
Teknopark İstanbul, an International Prestige Project of Turkey particularly regarding İstanbul will form the basis for multi-use applications of defense technologies. It will also become a technology base for the creation of Turkey’s unique brands, contribute to the exportation of high-tech products and serve as a meeting point for the business community and academia where ingenuity will turn into products.
