TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Defense ministries from Iran and Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Tehran on Tuesday to boost the two neighboring countries' defense cooperation.

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan and his visiting Iraqi counterpart Khalid al-Obeidi concluded their second round of talks in Iran’s capital, Tehran, by inking a MoU.

The agreement was aimed at expanding cooperation between the two sides on the establishment of a national army in Iraq to help the Arab country maintain its territorial integrity and security.

The two sides also decided to continue their consultations on finding mechanisms for ensuring security in the region.

Earlier on Monday, Dehqan had voiced his country’s preparedness to help neighboring Iraq increase its military power, and referred to Iran’s support for Iraqi army as part of the Tehran’s defense and security strategies in the region.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group has made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the popular forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of the ISIL offensive.

They have been committing heinous crimes in the areas they have taken, including the mass execution of civilians as well as Iraqi army troops and officers.

Amid tensions in Iraq, Iran is known as the first country to help the Arab country and has always voiced support for Iraq’s solidarity and prosperity.

i'm sure iran is MORE than willing to help iraqi military in every aspect for FREE .

and for obvious reasons . more powerful military in iraq has direct effect on iran's national security .

ISIS was 50km far from iran for Lord's sake !!

They would never dare to come closer. What would they do to a 80 million strong country? Not even considering the Artesh and IRGC. Let's face it, they received support from some Iraqi tribes and the Iraqi military never really fought them. It will be a total different story in Iran.

they received support from some Iraqi tribes
yes they did bro , thats true . but lets see the whole glass :

a heck lot more tribes fought against them
Iraqi military never really fought them
this is my humble opinion bro : iraqi army fought them really well . yeah some fled the scene during the war and they were cowards .

but again , speaking in general , iraqi army gave a lot of martyrs for the sake of regional security .

I didn't mean any disrespect to anyone but the fact is that Iraq was devided when ISIS attacked. That's why they were so successful. They won't stand a chance against a united nation.

It's because Sunnis were allowing them to eat and sleep in their homes, even now there are no bombings in southern Shi'a majority Iraq as locals help the army and don't house ISIS members, most of Iran aren't Arabs so the risk is little.

In the 2013 protests the locals simply ignored/accepted ISIS, they even allowed them to infiltrate and wave their flags, of course IA didn't do anything for over a year because that's too sectarian but now it's the same Sunnis that are paying the biggest price, who knows they might learn from it.
