  • FBR is stepping up efforts to bring the non-filers into the tax net.
  • FBR is likely to issue notices to at least 0.1 million non-filers who own a house larger than 500 square yards or a vehicle over 1,000CC.
  • The number of total tax filers stood at 2.2 million as compared to the previous 1.4 million.

Pakistan faces the grim economic crisis and fiscal deficit is one of them grilling the economic situations of the country. Tax filers ranging less than even less than 4 million in the country of more than 200 million is not a satisfactory figure but an increase in the number of tax filers is something that deserves appreciation. This has happened for the very first time that the number of tax-filers has crossed the figure of two million.

FBR is stepping up efforts to bring the non-filers into the tax net and for this purpose, the tax authority will issue the notices to non-filers after the stipulated time period which is currently scheduled for August 2. FBR is likely to issue notices to at least 0.1 million non-filers who own a house larger than 500 square yards or a vehicle over 1,000CC, Dawn news reported.

Apparently the plan is to have four million filers by the next year.

Just think about it for a second
there must be millions of luxury homes in Pakistan. Each one of them need to be asked where their source of income was to buy those houses .
That combined with millions of mid size shopowners and over 200000 industrial gas users who have never even declared their businesses ..... we have millions of more tax filers.

good news.....with time things shall improve even people will get used to giving tax. However over taxation should not be done.

It will take time to increase number of tax payers and streamline taxes ....good start

Good progress but Tax Filer does not mean Tax payer. Anyone can file a 0 tax return. The question is how many new tax payers are added to the net.

For the first time ever an attempt is being made to find out who owns what and who pays what.
I remember one of my uncles used to import fridges. We as kids used to wait for fridges to come and our job was to
Unload what came inside fridges. Back then it used to be watches, iron, vcr, games and small electric appliances ...... everything duty free and on top fridges duty was fudged by paying bribe.... imagine the extent of stealing from the government. It was and still is rampant.

2.2 million tax filers = 1.03% of the population

Are you including children and elderly? Small time traders, low income workers and other low income groups should not be government priority, they get taxed indirectly. Make sure they pay their electricity bills that's it for now.

it is mostly the salaried people who were not filing tax returns earlier while the tax has been deducted......i dont understand what good this will bring to our economy when the tax has already been deducted its just that they are filing the tax return now.

thing is how & when this small business and shops who are earning in millions but never declare it, comes under tax?

Main object should be bring local traders in tax net. They have destroyedthe economy of pakistan by keep importing and then not paying income tax.

Great progress. PTI Government can only be applauded for this achievement.

If it increases by another million within a year, I would say PTI Government is on the right path.

Hold your horses. would you complain about 40-50% tax in UK, no, you would just stfu and pay

This ignorance baffles me.--- Why, I mean why you guys make comments like these without the required knowledge?

Importing and not paying income tax, how is this possible?

Anybody importing pays:
Custom duty
Sales tax 17%
Regulatory duty
Additional sales tax 3%
Additional custom duty
Income Tax
(in monthly sales tax return, further 3%)

Without paying these, he can't get his container out of the port.
