Sources said the army has moved a proposal to add six new regiments — with a total of 108 launchers — to its existing holding of three regiments to plug gaps in its artillery arm.

NEW DELHI: The army is set to get an artillery boost with a proposal being moved to raise six new regiments of the indigenous Pinaka Multi-Launcher Rocket System (MLRS), a formidable system designed to annihilate enemy targets with a blanket of precisely guided rockets.

Tata Power and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) will get a major share of the Rs 1,950-crore contract that is to be approved by the defence ministry as they are the primary manufacturers of the mobile artillery system, along with state-run Bharat Earth Movers

Sources said the army has moved a proposal to add six new regiments — with a total of 108 launchers — to its existing holding of three regiments to plug gaps in its artillery arm. The proposal is to process it as a repeat order under the buy Indian category with an initial allotment of Rs 1,950 crore.

The value of the contract could however go up, sources said. Impressed by the capabilities of the MLRS — the system is capable of flattening a 3.9 sq km area at a range of 40 km in less than a minute — the defence ministry is also moving ahead to increase the capacity of the Ordnance Factory Board to produce the rockets in India.

From the existing capacity of 1,000 rockets a year, the government has sanctioned an increase to 5,000 rockets annually, in a project that would costRs 1,388 crore. In addition, Defence Research and Development Organisation is also working at increasing the range of the system from the present 40 km to 60 km by making improvements in the rockets. Field trials for this new, improved Pinaka II rocket are expected to start shortly.

Pinak MK3 with greater range and Satellite guidence is coming. DRDO had one project of 250 KG payload and 120 KM range rocket. Do not know what happened to that,

@Abingdonboy any obvious platforms in mind???

Pinaka mki or mkii

Anyways six regiments consist of 108 batteries is a lot of firepower. Welcome addition indeed.
Given the stage of development the system is at I'd say it is more than likely these 6 regiments will all fire the Pinaka mk.2 as will all existing Pinaka regiments in the near future.

I am pissed off at the opposition's attempts to weaken our India. They work for foreign funded money against the Indian government.

The Armament and Combat Engineering Cluster wing of DRDO, Pune is exploring the possibility of increasing the range of Pinaka Multi Barrel Rocket Launch System ( MBRL) from 40 km to 60 km, a top official said here today.

“The trials are in the process at the cluster, which will be followed by field based trials,”Anil M Datar, the distinguished scientist and ACE Director General told reporters on the sidelines of a graduation day function at the Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College here.

On ongoing projects, Datar said that ACE is engaged in making weapons for the next six to 10 years, considering the technological advancements.

He said ACE was working to get more accuracy to target in guided rockets, even as manual labour is reduced and automation increased.

ACE was also in the process of developing a quick launcher portable bridge that can move along with the equipment, Datar said.

Earlier addressing the graduates, Datar said there was a huge gap between defence technology in India and that found worldwide and called for steps to bridge it. Further research was essential for improving existing systems and developing new ones, he said.

Datar stressed the need for educational institutes to impart the latest knowledge to enable young engineers develop technologies for advanced weapons systems to make the nation self reliant in critical defence technology systems.

Any war strategies are directly related to availabilityand efficiency of weapons, he said, adding that in thechanging scenario, global wars and space wars may become a reality.

TATA, L&T is a very good company we can count on them, good move by the government to give orders to these companies

We should deploy this system near to LOC in large numbers, and next time when enemy violate ceasefire agreement should use pinaka along with our howitzers. I don't know so far why army is reluctant to use mbrls against enemy positions in Loc.
