HYDERABAD: Noted Bangladeshi novelist Taslima Nasreen was roughed up by activists of Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) at a book release function on Thursday.

A group of 20 MIM workers, led by MLAs Afsar Khan, Ahmed Pasha and Mozum Khan, stormed the Press Club premises and raised slogans against the author.

Nasreen was here to release the Telugu translation of her latest novel Shodh .

As the function was about to conclude, the MIM activists suddenly barged into the conference hall, attacked the press photographers, damaged the furniture and glass panes and some of them reached the dais and roughed up the novelist.

The police later took the legislators and their supporters into custody.

Nasreen, whose works including the banned novel Lajja had raised the hackles of Muslim organisations, was safely escorted to the airport with the help of journalists and the organisers of the function.

Several feminist writers and representatives of rationalist organisations were present.

Police slap case on Taslima

HYDERABAD: In a stunning follow-up to the attack on Taslima Nasreen by Muslim activists, the Hyderabad police on Saturday booked the exiled Bangladeshi author for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, language — a charge that can get her two years in prison, if proven.

The attackers are roaming freely, charged with minor misdemeanours. The move by cops, who had dragged their feet on complaints against the goons of a city-based political group, the Majlis-Ittehadul Muslimeen, booked Taslima under section 153 (a) of the IPC after a complaint by MIM’s floor leader in the AP assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi.

The MIM leader, who had warned Taslima would be killed if she stepped into Hyderabad again, alleged the novelist had hurt sentiments of the Muslim community with her writings and her speeches against Islam. The case against Taslima was filed at Hyderabad's Punjagutta police station.

Why the police filed a case against Taslima by taking MIM's contention seriously appears to be politically driven — the ruling Congress needs the Muslim group’s support. And as for MIM, the group, which once backed the Nizam’s rule and opposed joining the Indian union, was under pressure from the city's Urdu press for letting the feisty author off 'lightly'.

The largest selling Urdu paper in its Saturday edition published a picture of MIM legislators throwing a bouquet at Taslima and chided the party for throwing flowers at the author. The daily poured scorn on MIM legislators for "not even throwing chappals and shoes" at the Bangladeshi novelist, who was in the city for the release of the Telugu translation of her book Shodh .

"Passions are being aroused in the old city with the Urdu dailies and the MIM competing with each other for the sake of religion. There was no other way for the MIM but to file a case against Taslima to demonstrate that they are doing enough," a political analyst said.

Its all just politics. The only reason Nasreen has been allowed to stay in India is because of our constitution and judiciary.

Left to politicians, she would have been jailed long before this to woo the vote banks, who are notorious for voting solely on the basis of religious bigotry.

If only people started voting to get a road built in their neighbourhood rather than prosecute an author who's books they have never read, and never will read.

Its ironic that people get so emotional just because someone tells them to. Reminds me of the Rushdie saga, where people got murdered over a book that had little to do with islam. Much worse stuff has been written about that religion. But those authors don't get fatwas.

It also reminds me of the shivaji book banning saga. People need to stop worshipping shivaji. He was a king, not a god, and he isn't beyond analysis or ridicule.

Taslima booked, not tormentor MLA

G.S. RADHAKRISHNA

Hyderabad, Aug. 11: City police have registered a case against Taslima Nasreen but none against those who have threatened to kill her.

The case, for promoting ill-will between religious groups, was registered on a complaint by an MLA who has said the Bangladeshi writer would be assassinated if she ever set foot in Hyderabad again.

Majlis-e-Itahadul-Musalmeen MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi had made the threat on Thursday, hours after three other MLAs of his party had led a mob to a book release and attacked Taslima, pelting her with books, bags and bouquets.

Although cases have been registered against the three MLAs, who got bail the same day, none has been filed yet against Akbaruddin, the son of Musalmeen founder Sultan Salauddin Owaisi.

The police said they had approached a court for permission to register a case against Akbaruddin. But they admitted that none had been registered against the Majlis Bachao Tehreek, which has said it would have murdered Taslima on Thursday had its plans not been upset by the Musalmeen’s “amateurish” attack.

A senior police officer justified filing the case against the writer.

“Taslima is a controversial personality and her writings have always provoked the religious-minded,” said the deputy commissioner of police, N. Madhusudhan Reddy.

The first information report, registered last night at Punjagutta police station, says Taslima has a habit of slinging mud on Islam and making heinous charges against the religion.

The organisers of the book release, the Centre for Inquiry headed by N. Innaiah, have also been charged with holding the programme without informing the police or taking their permission.

“Who would have been responsible if the Musalmeen MLAs or Tehreek activists had succeeded in harming her” was the logic provided by an officer.

Asked about the death threat he had issued, Akbaruddin said he had only sought to implement the fatwa issued by Bangladeshi clerics against Taslima.

Another outfit, the Dasgah-e-Jehad-Shaheed, today held a march, with the protesters chanting: “Taslima go away from India.”

The marchers, who included many burqa-clad women, burnt an effigy of the writer.

“Taslima is a bad apple in the Islamic community. Throw her out of the country,” said Rehanussia Begum, schoolteacher and Dasgah activist.

Rights groups have criticised the police for their failure to protect Taslima and the delay in action against the Musalmeen MLAs and activists.

N. Saida Rao of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties said the attack by the MLAs amounted to a violation of the Representation of the People Act and undermined the country’s secular character.

A few Maoist groups, too, condemned the “cowardly” attack by “misguided religious and Rightist groups”.

After the incident at the press club, where the translation of one of Taslima’s books was released, the police never let Taslima out of their sight till she caught a Calcutta flight the same evening. She was confined within the airport restaurant for over three hours under police security.

“She wanted to do some shopping at Charminar and Pathergatti but could not,” one of the organisers said.

Great Justice!!!

It is total humbug that because there is a fatwa in Bangladesh, it has to be implemented by the Indian Moslems.

As if Indian laws are invalid!

Logic!

Same arrogance that Bush displays that the US is beyond law, some of the Indian Moslem community seem to apply.

And the Indian legal machinery is all set to uphold its 'secularism' with unholy haste and it does not care about the safety or freedom of thought and deed of an individual!

Sir,

Why dont we just scrap all IPC for muslims (Indian Penal Code) it doesnt affect them it seems. Bangladeshi Clerics for them matter more than our consititution.
Even more disgusting is that, these people who attacked her are Members of the Legislative assembly, the law makers of the state. This is atrocious to say the least.

RSS and the likes are pretty much slaughtered by the mainstream press on a daily basis. So there's no hypocrisy involved here. Don't dream stuff that isn't there.

Nasreen wasn't there to rant against islam. It was a goddamn book launch. Her views are critical of established islam, and she has every right to have them.

The islamic fatwas and likes don't apply in India. Muslims have their own personal laws, and they should be happy with that.
And MLAs. Legislators are openly attacking people and these MIM guys are talking about beheading publicly.

I don't see even the RSS talking about beheading people for being critical to their views. Thank goodness these people don't have the majority. RSS will look like pussycats in front of these beasts.

Hyderabad: A case has been registered against Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi for threatening to kill controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen.

Punjagutta police have booked a case against Akbaruddin, MIM floor leader in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, under Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC last night after a local court granted permission based on evidence provided, DCP (West Zone) N Madhusudan Reddy told PTI today.

Police had sought Court's permission to take up the investigation against Akbaruddin for threatening to kill the exiled novelist if she visited Hyderabad again. The MLA, however, has not been arrested.

Police have obtained a video-footage of the sit-in organised by MIM workers on Thursday in front of Punjagutta police station where the legislator had threatened to "behead" Nasreen.

Earlier, police booked a case against Nasreen under IPC Section 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, language etc) on a complaint by Akbaruddin who alleged that the author had hurt the sentiments of the faithful with her writings and speeches against Islam.

Nasreen was attacked by a large group of MIM activists, led by three party MLAs, at the Press Club here on August 9 at a function to release the Telugu translation of her novel "Shodh".

Modi didn't personally go and behead muslims. He was a little less blatant than that. He got the police to turn a blind eye while brainwashed mobs did the work.

Neither did he openly talk about killing muslims.

If these MIM guys get power, they will be much worse than Modi and RSS. They will, as I said, make Modi look like domestic pets.

Lets enforce the law on the mid-level crooks for now. Then we'll talk about nabbing the big shots.

P.S. Inflating the figures won't fool anyone except yourself.
