Monday, April 25, 2011 - Partner countries of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline project will meet in the Indian capital New Delhi on Thursday to negotiate gas prices, the United Press International (UPI) news agency reported on Monday.

The meeting will also be attended by officials of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), one of the financial backers for the project that is expected to cost $7.6 billion.

"All member states of this grandiose infrastructure project attach great importance to the TAPI gas pipeline construction,” Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov told a recent government meeting.

“They appreciate the fact that, in addition to economic benefits, its implementation will contribute to strengthening the peace and stability, sustainable socio-economic development in the Asian region and global energy security," he added.

The proposed 1,043-mile pipeline will transport 33 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from Turkmenistan’s supergiant Dauletabad field and its South Yolotan-Osman deposit to the three recipient countries.

Both India and Pakistan plan to import 38 million cubic meters of gas per day, while Afghanistan plans on purchasing 14 million cubic meters.

The pipeline is planned to wind through Afghanistan’s troubled Herat and Kandahar provinces and Pakistan’s Quetta district on the way to the Pakistani-Indian border.

The Afghan government has pledged to ensure the pipeline’s security through its territory.

Last December, the four inked an inter-government agreement and a gas pipeline framework agreement.
