Chennai: MDMK chief Vaiko on Monday said that Kashmir will not be in India when the country will celebrate its 100th year of freedom.

"Kashmir will not be in India when India will celebrate its 100th year of freedom. They (BJP) have smudged Kashmir in mud. I have expressed my view on Kashmir earlier too. I have attacked Congress 30 per cent and BJP 70 per cent on the Kashmir issue," he told reporters.

Free detainees in Kashmir, urges Stalin

The Leader of the Opposition and DMK president M K Stalin has urged the Centre to release leaders of political parties and their families kept under detention after scrapping of the special status for the Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcation of the State into Union Territories.

In a series in which he has attached a Washington Post report about teargassing of agitators in the valley, Stalin has termed as unconscionable and unacceptable the detention of family members of political leaders and urged the Centre to release them and not take any punitive action against them. He has cited a Washington Post report titled: “Locked up and shut down. How India has silenced the opposition”.

A similar report by the BBC on the unrest in the valley has been dubbed by Modi supporters as fake news on Twitter. They have claimed the BBC report related to protests in the Pakistan held Kashmir though the visuals showed protestors carrying placards denouncing scrapping of 370.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has said the Modi Government has withdrawn special status to Kashmir because this was the only Muslim majority in the country. In a rejoinder, Tamil Nadu BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan has said Chidambaram is concerned only about Muslims. “Where was he when Kashmiri Pundits were driven out of the valley”.

Party spokesman for the State Narayanan Tripathi has said Congress allowed special status for Kashmir to continue for so long, though meant to be a temporary provision, because it Muslim majority State.
