Tamil Nadu to get 100MW more from Kudankulam plant
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu will get an additional 100MW of electricity from unit 1 of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant when generation begins, said Union power minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Electricity from unit 1 is likely to be fed into the grid by August-end, and Tamil Nadu will get about 560MW from it.
According to the initial agreement, Tamil Nadu was to get 462.5MW from unit 1, which attained criticality last month. After Thursday's announcement, the state will get 562.5MW from unit 1. As a result, Tamil Nadu will get 1,025MW against 962MW allocated earlier when the second unit is commissioned in March.
The allocation comes in the wake of persistent demands made by chief minister J Jayalalithaa for the entire power from unit 1.
"Tamil Nadu had requested the Union ministry of power for allocation of the entire power to be generated from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant to the state. Similarly, the ministry also received a request from Kerala for allocation of 500MW. However, they have been informed that the distribution of power among states would be as per the guidelines," Scindia said in a written reply.
In a series of letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2012 when the power crisis was acute in Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa asked for the entire power generated from the unit 1 for Tamil Nadu. The Centre refused to accede to her request but hinted that an additional 100MW would be allocated to Tamil Nadu. According to the revised allocation, out of the 1000MW from the unit 1, Tamil Nadu will get 562.5MW, Karnataka 221MW, Kerala 133MW and the Union territory of Puducherry 33.5MW. The remaining 50MW has not been allocated.
"The initial criticality phase is over and subsequent steps and tests have been conducted. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board has given clearance after conducting the required tests," AERB chief S S Bajaj told TOI."We expect unit 1 to be commissioned by August end. Initially, the unit won't produce 1000MW immediately. But, over next few weeks after it is commissioned, it will attain full capacity," said Bajaj.
