Officials: Taliban Kill 30 Afghans After Stopping Bus
Sunday, October 19, 200
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — Taliban militants stopped a bus traveling on Afghanistan's main highway through a dangerous part of the country's south, seized about 50 people on board and killed around 30 of them, officials said Sunday.

A Taliban spokesman took responsibility for the attack but claimed to have killed 27 Afghan army soldiers. Afghan officials said no soldiers were aboard and all the victims were civilians.

Militants stopped the bus traveling in a two-bus convoy in a Taliban-controlled area about 40 miles west of Kandahar, said provincial police chief Matiullah Khan.

He said two buses had been traveling together, and the militants had tried to stop the first one but failed. He said the insurgents fired at the first bus, killing a child on board.

Officials offered varying death tolls from the attack, which occurred in an area where government forces cannot travel safely without heavy military protection. That may explain why news of Thursday's killings did not emerge until Sunday.

The Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman, Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi, said 31 people were killed and that six of the dead were beheaded in a separate area from where the other 25 bodies were found.

Khan originally claimed about 40 civilians were killed but later Sunday, he lowered the death toll telling a news conference 24 people had been killed. He said the victims had come from northern Afghanistan and were between 20 and 25 years old.

Khan said authorities had arrested four Taliban commanders in connection with the attack.

There was no way to independently verify the number of victims.

"The Taliban want to hide the news that they arrested and killed innocent Afghan civilians," Khan said, dismissing their claim the victims were soldiers.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said militants looked at the documents of those traveling on the bus, released all the civilians and killed only soldiers.

Taliban attacks have become increasingly lethal this year, as the militia has gained power and surged throughout southern and eastern Afghanistan. Violence in Afghanistan this year has killed more than 5,100 people — mostly militants — according to an Associated Press count of figures from Afghan and Western officials.

What a shame. Hope its an eye opener for those happy with Taliban rule.

woman working for a UK-registered charity has been shot dead near Kabul University in the Afghan capital.

The woman, Gayle Williams, was a UK and South African national. She was killed by two men on a motorbike, witnesses told the BBC.

The Taleban are reported to have said they killed her because she was working for a Christian organisation called Serve Afghanistan.

In August the Taleban killed three foreign women near Kabul.

Further worries

Ms Williams was killed while walking to work, police said.

An eyewitness told the BBC that two men on a motorbike drew alongside her. One man then got off the motorbike and shot her at close range before jumping back on the bike and escaping.

Children on the street going to school also saw the incident.

"Some bullets hit her body and some hit her leg and when police got there she was dead," interior ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary told the AFP news agency.

The BBC's Martin Patience in Kabul says this is not the first time that a foreigner has been killed in the Afghan capital by armed men.

But the incident will raise further concerns about the security situation in Afghanistan, our correspondent says.

In the past week, there have been three assassinations in the southern city of Kandahar, all carried out by men on motorbikes.

Operations suspended

Serve Afghanistan is a UK registered charity whose overseas staff are volunteers. It focuses on education and training for people with disabilities.

Taleban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told AFP that they killed Ms Williams "because she was working for an organisation which was preaching Christianity in Afghanistan".

In August another aid group, the International Rescue Committee, suspended operations after three of its foreign female staff - a British-Canadian, a Canadian and a Trinidadian-American - were shot with their Afghan driver close to Kabul.

The Taleban claimed responsibility for that attack, saying the women were foreign spies.

Taliban militants stopped a bus travelling on Afghanistan's main road through a wild and dangerous part of the country's south, seized about 50 people on board and slaughtered around 30 of them, officials said.

A Taliban spokesman said the militia's fighters carried out the attack but had killed 27 Afghan army soldiers riding on the bus.

Militants stopped the bus travelling in a two-bus convoy in the Maiwand district of Kandahar province, a Taliban-controlled area about 40 miles west of Kandahar city, said Matiullah Khan, the provincial police chief. About 50 people were taken hostage, though several were freed, he said.

Taliban Kill South Korean Hostage as Demands Go Unmet Associated Press
Afghan police officers stood guard in Ghazni Province after the death of one of 23 South Korean hostages was confirmed on Wednesday.

Sign In to E-Mail or Save This KABUL, Afghanistan, July 25 — The Taliban shot dead one of their 23 South Korean hostages on Wednesday after complaining that the Afghan government had not responded positively to their demands. The victim’s body was brought to a United States military base in Ghazni Province, said an Afghan official negotiating with the Taliban captors for the hostages’ release.

The official, Waheedullah Mujadeddi, said he was expecting eight hostages to be released Wednesday evening, but by late evening it was not clear if a transfer had occurred. He confirmed the death of a male hostage.

“I can confirm one of the hostages was very sick and there was no doctor or medicine, and the Taliban shot him,” Mr. Mujadeddi said. He said he had learned the news directly from the group holding the hostages.

The South Koreans are members of a Protestant church group who were on a 10-day relief mission; most are women in their 20s and 30s, and some are nurses and teachers. They were abducted last Thursday while traveling on a public bus on the main highway from the capital, Kabul, to the southern city of Kandahar.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, who claims to speak for the kidnappers, said that a hostage was killed because the government had not agreed to an initial release of eight Taliban prisoners in exchange for eight Koreans.

“They do not pay attention and did not give a positive response,” Mr. Ahmadi said, “so that’s why we killed one Korean hostage.” He gave the man’s name and said he was killed in midafternoon in a desert area in the district of Qarabagh near the main highway.

The Associated Press, citing KBS, the South Korean public broadcasting network, reported from Kabul that the slain hostage was a 42-year-old pastor, Bae Hyung-kyu.

Mr. Ahmadi said more hostages would be killed in 10 hours if the government was not more cooperative.

In the morning, Mr. Ahmadi contacted journalists and said that the Taliban was running out of patience and would start to kill hostages if the government did not meet demands for 23 Taliban prisoners to be released and South Korean troops to be withdrawn from Afghanistan.

The killing of the South Korean follows the death of a German engineer at the hands of kidnappers in the province of Wardak, near Kabul. Another German and four Afghans are still being held by those kidnappers.

The Taliban and other insurgents have often sought to abduct or kill foreign civilians to deter reconstruction and aid projects in Afghanistan and undermine the government. As a result, few foreigners travel on the highway from Kabul to Kandahar

Taliban kill Afghan boy for teaching English

KHOST: Taliban militants shot dead a teenage boy in southeastern Afghanistan for teaching English to his classmates, police said on Thursday.

Taliban militants have killed a number of teachers and students in recent years for attending government-run schools, taking part in classes for girls or what the hardline Islamist militants consider un-Islamic subjects.

Armed men arrived at the school in the Sayed Karam district of Paktia province and grabbed a 16-year-old student and dragged him outside.

"Taliban militants took the boy out and killed him (...)

Afghan Taliban kill mother, son, Lebanese man rescued
)

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Aug 9 (Reuters) Taliban guerrillas have killed an Afghan mother and her son after accusing them of spying for foreign troops in Afghanistan, an official said today.

Separately, Afghan and foreign troops rescued a Lebanese engineer the Taliban had kidnapped last month in the southern province of Zabul, the provincial police chief said.

The mother and and her adult son were shot dead yesterday and their bodies hung from a tree in Helmand, another violence-racked south province, the deputy governor said.

''It was a brutal act,'' Amir Mohammad Akundzada said, adding the Taliban were killing civilians who refuse to provide shelter or food for their fighters.

In Zabul, police chief Noor Mohammad Paktin said the Lebanese hostage, identified only as Khalid, was rescued from neighbouring Ghazni province in a pre-dawn raid by Afghan and US-led coalition forces.

The Taliban had threatened to kill the man, who worked for a U.S.-funded road project in Zabul, unless the government freed several Taliban prisoners.

The Taliban could not be contacted for immediate comment about either incident. But the militants have in the past executed several Afghans after accusing them of spying for US-led troops.

The US military, separately, said 12 Taliban fighters were killed in a clash in eastern Nuristan province yesterday. Two US soldiers and one Afghan soldier were wounded.

Afghanistan is going through its worst violence since US-led forces overthrew the Taliban government in 2001.

Almost 1,800 people have been killed in attacks by Taliban, drug barons and operations by foreign forces this year, mostly in the south and east, the Taliban's homeland.

The victims include militants, civilians, aid workers, Afghan security forces and almost 80 foreign troops.

Talibans cliam to be Muslims, but are they really? A true Muslim should follow the rules and teachings of Islam and not their leaders but the teachings of Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) directly. They say they are under attack of west and they are performing Jihad. What are the Islamic teachings of Islam about Jihad? Basic teachings about jihad are:

Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said never kill the innocent (even if they are on your opponent's side), never kill the captives and do not seperate (The Arabic word is 'Masla' of dead bodies. I am not having a correct word for this so please accept my apology) the organs of the dead bodies of your enemies.

We have seen in many videos (some even shown in the In-Camera briefing of joint session of Parliement) that Talibans very openly behead the captives. Pakistani Soldiers captured by them are martyred.

They kill innocent people in Afghanistan and even in Pakistan, like they did as stated above, and take captive the innocent Chinese or other foreign engineers just here for the betterment of this country as Ambassaders. Is arresting or murdereing an Ambasseder allowed in Islam or any other religion? NO!

I even have seen videos in which these Talibans are beheading the dead soldiers just for practice. They say that it will make their hearts strong enough to behead the living captives.

What Islam are they following? To some extent I believe the Taliban in Afghanistan are right, but what about TTP? They are bigger enemies to Islam then West.

KIT

New road now terror highway in Afghanistan By James Palmer

Tuesday, 21 Oct, 2008 | 08:34 AM PST |

KANDAHAR: The mood inside the bus is grave. It is just before 3am. The passengers — burdened with suitcases, cardboard boxes, cloth bundles and flasks of green tea — have the air of prisoners of war being transported to an uncertain fate.

“When you’re on the bus, you don’t talk with the people you don’t know in case they’re with the Taliban,” said 19-year-old Asadullah, an electronic spare parts dealer who, like many Afghans, uses only one name. Asadullah and his fellow 55 passengers are taking a ride along the 483-km highway that many believe is the most dangerous stretch of road on the planet. Linking Kandahar and Kabul – Afghanistan’s two largest and most economically vital cities – and completed almost five years ago, the road was meant to open a gateway to economic development and improve the quality of life for Afghans.

The US state department touted the $190m project as “the most visible sign of America’s post-war reconstruction” in Afghanistan. But today the road is a symbol of instability across the country, the failure of government and international security forces to maintain law and order, and the increasing presence of the Taliban.

Government and military officials say insurgents and bandits regularly pull travellers from their vehicles, murdering or kidnapping them for ransoms. Corrupt government security forces seek bribes and collaborate with insurgents and robbers. Roadside bombs frequently target Afghan police and military patrols, along with Nato convoys. No one in an official capacity can even quantify the violence.

“I have to take these risks,” said Asadullah, who makes the treacherous journey between Kabul and Kandahar once a month. “I have to make money to buy food for my family.”

Afghans unable to afford the $100 one-way airfare between Kabul and Kandahar pay an average of $6 for the bus ride. They hope the bus will be safer than travelling in private vehicles, which are favoured targets of the Taliban and highwaymen.

Responsibility for security along the highway initially was handed to Afghanistan’s national police, but shortages of men and weaponry, and the recent increase in violence along the road have forced the government to deploy military units as reinforcements. The road is littered with burned-out green police pick-up trucks, 4x4 vehicles, Nato supply trucks and demolished bridges.

General Abdul Alim Kohistani, the regional police commander who oversees the territory, said he has 180 men to man the 14 checkpoints along the route. He added that he needs at least 320 more officers and heavier firepower to provide adequate security.“The Taliban has RPGs [rocket propelled grenades] and mortars. How can we fight them when we only have PKs, AK-47s, and fewer men?” Kohistani asked, referring to the machine guns and rifles his men carry. “We want to take control of this highway and show the world and the Afghan people that we are capable of doing this.” The army now has a base near the midpoint between Kabul and Kandahar and has established 15 checkpoints with at least 40 to 50 soldiers at each one.

Defence ministry spokesman General Zaher Azimi said that manning checkpoints on the highway is a policing job and the army is already hard-pressed with other duties. But the military has no alternative because “instability is increasing day-by-day”. While careful not to criticise the police force, Azimi says if he were in charge of security along the highway he would “pursue the insurgents into the surrounding areas off the road to capture or push them as far back as possible”.—Dawn/Guardian News Service
