KARACHI: Following the killing of a gang-leader’s brother during an operation conducted by law enforcement agencies in Karachi’s Lyari area on Wednesday, at least four people including two women and a child were killed and 12 others including two policemen wounded in a violent clash between rival gangs that followed, DawnNews reported.

Shiraz Zikri, the brother of Ghaffar Zikri who is a key figure of the gang war, was killed earlier during a joint operation conducted by police and Rangers’ personnel in Lyari.

The situation between in Lyari turned tense after the killing and rival gang-members engaged in an armed clash using automatic weapons and hand grenades.

Continuous firing and hand grenade blasts are occurring in Jhat Pat Market and Chakiwara area.

Four people including two women and a child were killed as a result of firing and blasts in the area whereas over 12 wounded including two policemen during the incident.

Moreover, the rival gang-members hurled a hand grenade on a school as well.

The victims were shifted to the Lyari General Hospital and Civil hospital.

The shops and business shut down in the area as people were left confined to their homes.

BANNU: Two people, including a Frontier Corps (FC) man were killed Wednesday as a result of firing by unknown motorcyclists in Bannu, DawnNews reported.

According to police, the two persons, who were brothers, sustained severe injuries when they were fired upon within the remit of the Hoyad Police Station in Janikhel.

The victims were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in a critical condition where they succumbed to their injuries.

Following the incident, police personnel cordoned off the area and a search operation went underway to apprehend those responsible.

No arrests were reported till the filing of this report.

The northwestern town of Bannu, which stands at the gateway to the semi-autonomous Waziristan tribal region, is 150 kilometres southwest of Peshawar, the capital of KP.

The town has witnessed a number of attacks and was the scene of a massive jail break in April 2012 during which 384 prisoners escaped from its central prison.
