TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan has test fired for the first time a locally developed, submarine-launched missile designed to counter the threat of China's fast-expanding navy, a report said July 7.
An unknown number of Hsiung Feng II (Brave Wind II)ship-to-ship missiles, developed by the military-run Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology, were launched during a drill late last month, the Liberty Times said.
The drill was part of the navy's five-year project to enhance the capabilities of two Dutch-built Sword Dragonclass submarines acquired in the late 1980s, it said, citing an unnamed military source.
"Although Taiwan has only two combat-ready submarines, once they are armed with such missiles, they will be able to serve as a deterrent to the Chinese naval fleets," the source said.
Taiwan's navy operates a fleet of four submarines, but only the two Dutch-built shipscould be deployed in the event of war. The other two were built by the United States in the 1940s.
The Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the report.
Taiwan's military has also putinto service land-based and air-launched Hsiung Feng IIs which have a range of 90 miles.
Tensions between Taiwan and its former rival China have reduced markedly sinceMa Ying-jeou of the China-friendly Kuomintang party came to power in 2008 on promises of beefing up trade links and allowing in more Chinese tourists.
But Beijing still considers the island part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary, even though Taiwan has governeditself since China's civil war ended in 1949 and prompted Taiwan to continue modernizing its armed forces.
Analysts say the missile will give the two subs beyond-vision striking capability that could be used to offset the threat of China's naval fleet, which has undergone rapid modernization to make it the world's second-biggest.

good news, always nice to see their progress.

as long as the military strength of the mainland is 10x times stronger, Taiwan should always be encourged to develop a better armed forces.

Reports of Taiwan Sub Missile Test False: Experts
BY WENDELL MINNICK | PUBLISHED: 8 JUL 2011 12:31

TAIPEI - Recent local media reports that Taiwan test-fired an anti-ship Hsiung Feng 2 (Brave Wind) missile from a Dutch-built Hai Lung (Sea Dragon) submarineduring an exercise in late June now appear to be false.
On July 7, the Chinese-language Liberty Times reported the missile test, which was picked up by an English-language media service in Taipei without confirmation. The Liberty Times is closely linked to the pro-independence DemocraticProgressive Party, which opposes unification with China.
Taiwan's Hai Lung's have"absolutely no capability" of launching anti-ship missiles from their torpedo tubes, said a former Taiwan Navy official who worked with ordnance used on the submarines. "This is common sense since they still have problems with just launching torpedoes with the old fire control system."

for the record, this is a thug party which openly supported using violence against visiting mainland officials.

this is also the thug party which is constantly visiting the convicted former "President" -- who used his "air force one" to smuggle public funds to its offshore bank account. of course, that thug himself was the leader of the thug party.

china needs to get tough on taiwan.

china needs to spend much more on the military.

and all this no first use of nukes is ridiculous.
china should use nukes if china is losing a conventional war.

china desperately need an extreme right wing leader.
these left wing liberals are too nice to everyone and everyone is running all over china.

china should always be governed by hardline leaders.
only by having hardline leaders that will not hesitate to wipe any nation off this map if they ever threaten china, will china be safe from foreign nations trying to needle china. im talking about nations like japan, india, britain, france, US, vietnam, phillippines, etc.

the next chinese leader must dramatically increase military spending to 4% of GDP.
not hesitate to use economic sanctions (deny access to china's market, dump bonds, stop rare earth exports, etc).

if china continues to be nice, thats a sign of weakness to foreigners. then they know china will never use hardpower to retaliate thus they can bully china without consequences.

The practical range of sub-launched HF-2 will be extremely limited if the Dutch aren't willing to assist the cross-platform sensor integration between the subs & the recently-acquired P-3 Orion (the latter is need for over the horizon targeting).

Everyone have nuclear weapon! It is not just China... Everyone can increase their Defence Budget! If there was economic sanctions on China was put fourth then they can sustain only 1% of increase in GDP! I hope the CCP is not that foolish.
