Tokyo, July 23 (CNA) Taiwan was the largest source of foreign visitors to Japan in the first half of 2014, according to statistics released by a Japanese government-run agency Wednesday.

Out of the record high 6.26 million visitors to Japan in the first six months of the year, 1,391,000 of them came from Taiwan, representing a 35.1 percent annual increase in Taiwanese travelers, the Japan National Tourist Organization said.

The second most represented country over the period was South Korea with 1,276,000 visitors, a slight year-on-year decrease of 3.3 percent, it added.

China was the third largest source of Japan's foreign visitors with 1,009,200, the organization said, representing a massive year-on-year increase of 88.25 percent.

Overall, visitors were up 1.3 million from the first half of 2013, which analysts attributed to the depreciation of the Japanese yen and increased flights to Tokyo Haneda Airport.

Considering the growth in the first half of the year, the total number of international visitors to Japan for the year is likely to reach 12 million, according to the Japan Tourism Agency.
